NISE seeks end to tanker road accidents


The Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers (NISE), a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), which is responsible for finding solutions to safety problems in Nigeria, has called on both the Federal and state governments as well as all stakeholders to ensure the safety of Nigerians by preventing frequent tanker fire accidents in the country.

National Chairman of the body, A. B. Oyedebo, said the institution maintained its commitment to assisting the government to tackle the problems of petroleum tanker explosions and fires.

The group also expressed its interest and readiness to work with all responsible stakeholders, who could play a role in eliminating the hazard of petroleum tanker fires and explosion of Nigerian roads.

The institution has also encouraged every relevant stakeholder to take specific actions in some areas, which include regulations, urging the Department of Petroleum, Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs), road safety agencies and other regulatory bodies to take proper regulation of the design, construction, operations and maintenance of petroleum tankers.It stressed that the maintenance of petroleum tankers should be done by qualified engineers, who comply with basics standards for automobile maintenance.
