NUC approves master of public health, information tech for Miva

Miva Open University, Abuja, has received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence two new professional postgraduate programmes: the Master of Public Health (MPH) and the Master of Information Technology (MIT). This approval, conveyed in a letter referenced NUC/AP/P124/VOL.I/10 and dated February 26, 2025, follows a successful resource verification exercise conducted by the Commission on Friday, February 21, 2025.

With this latest milestone, Miva Open University’s School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) now offers four master’s programmes, following the earlier approval of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Public Administration (MPA). The NUC commended the university for the quality and quantity of human and physical resources already in place to support the newly approved programmes.

During the resource verification visit, the NUC team, led by Malam Abubakar M. Girei (Acting Director of Academic Planning, NUC), assessed the university’s infrastructure, faculty, and academic resources. The team reviewed the hardware, logic, software/cybernetics laboratories, public health laboratory, digital learning studios, learner support services, IT facilities, e-library, physical library, counselling unit, lecture rooms, and faculty offices. The team acknowledged the university’s commitment to delivering a globally competitive learning experience through a blended learning model that aligns with the NUC-CCMAS framework.

Speaking of the approval, the Vice Chancellor, Miva Open University, Professor Tayo Arulogun, expressed gratitude to the NUC for their rigorous evaluation and constructive feedback. “This approval is a testament to our dedication to providing high-quality, accessible education. At Miva, we are committed to equipping professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in the evolving fields of public health and information technology. We appreciate the NUC’s confidence in our capacity to deliver these programmes at the highest standard,” he stated.

The Registrar, Miva Open University, Iheanyi Akwitti, also highlighted the significance of this achievement. “With this approval, Miva Open University continues to expand its impact, ensuring that professionals in Nigeria and beyond have access to affordable and high-quality postgraduate education. These programmes will further strengthen our commitment to developing future-ready professionals in key industries and we are excited to welcome students to these transformative programmes.,” he noted.

The resource verification exercise was attended by several distinguished academics from the NUC, including Professor Azabe Dziki (Public Health), Mrs. Maureen Austin (Public Health), Professor Aminu Adamu (Information Technology), Hayatuddeen Umar (Information Technology), Malam Musa Alkali Usman (Chief Academic Planning Officer, NUC), and Jamila Dahiru (ODL, NUC).
