Osinbajo harps on positive character as Dowen marks 20th anniversary
Wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, has urged students across to country to develop positive character and conduct so as to excel in their future endeavours.
Speaking at the 20th anniversary thanksgiving service of Dowen College, Lagos, held at Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Osinbajo stated that good character with excellent education would launch an individual to greater heights. She however, cautioned that possessing great intellectual ability without good character would often result in a setback.
She therefore implored the youths to consciously be mindful of their behaviour, thoughts and demeanor, so as to make an indelible mark in their various communities.
Also, Dean, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Dr. Ephraim Ademowo, in his remarks charged the students to deploy their God-given gift for the benefit of the society and the mankind.
He said, “My father would always say ‘education is a process by which the brain is schooled to think in a logical manner.’ And so you must use your education for new discoveries, be original and break new grounds. Education is holistic, the mind and spiritual are taken into cognisance, and Dowen College is notable for that. They also offer scholarships to indigent students. If other schools will emulate this, there is a better tomorrow for Nigeria.”
Chairman, Board of Governors of the school, Dr. Olumide Philips, during the gala and awards night, recalled how the school gate was first opened to 11 students on October 6th 1997.
“That to me was like a community project, but God has used many people to give us all the support and active participation over the last 20 years to continue to elevate the status of this great institution to what we are all celebrating. We have recorded 100 per cent tertiary education achievements and our alumni all over the world have excelled in their academics.
“We can say with a sense of pride and enthusiasm that all measurable parameters point to progress in our Academics, Beauty, Culture and Discipline (our ABCD). We are proud to say that in the last 15-20 years, Dowen College has scored 100 per cent success in our external examinations and in this our anniversary year, our West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results show a record of A1- 36.3 per cent; A1-B3, 83.4 per cent and A1-C6 97.4 per cent,” he said.
Principal of the college, Mrs. Olawumi Togonu-Bickersteth, said the college’s co-curricular activities and support mechanism focuses on developing a total individual and creating social responsibility awareness among learners.
