PANOG wants egg Inclusion in School Feeding Programme
The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PANOG), Ogun State Chapter has appealed to the Federal Government to include egg in the meal served school children under the School Feeding Programme.
While making the call at Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, during a public lecture, the Chairperson of PANOG, Mrs. Blessing Alawode, insisted that the inclusion of egg in the meal would not only be beneficial for the children’s health but also increase the patronage of their members.
“We laud the school feeding programme of the Federal Government as it is worthy of praise, we however, appeal to them to include egg in the meal, not only for the reason of patronage, but primarily to allow our children the immense nutritional benefit of egg, which comes at an affordable rate. We at PANOG are ready to support the government in making sure they get it at affordable prices and guaranteed quality.”
The association also sought the support of government to partner farmers “to maintain stability in price and quantity of inputs like maize and soya, which forms over 70 per cent of our cost of production”.
The guest lecturer, Dr. Kunle Adeyemi, emphasised the importance of egg consumption, saying, people who eat eggs are not likely to have what he described as “degenerate eye diseases.”
Adeyemi, the Medical Director of State Government Office clinic, also used the opportunity to dissuade people from some notions that egg has high concentration of cholesterol, which is bad for the heart.
“I want to clear some notion that, egg is not good for all grades, I am categorically telling you now that egg can be eaten by all grades as this notion started as a result of saying egg contains a lot of cholesterol and it is not good for old people due to heart related problems.
“But now I stand to tell you that the kind of cholesterol in egg which is called the high density cholesterol is not harmful to our health as proven by research and also another notion is that egg has too much of cholesterol, this is not true.
“Egg has anti- oxidant that prevents the bi-product of stress as when stress accumulates in the body there is presence of what we call medically free radicals that may deny one from sleeping and egg contains all this anti oxidants,” Adeyemi said.
