Platform Petroleum’s milestones, innovation and Nigerian economy

Platform Petroleum Limited stands as a trailblazer in the Oil and Gas Industry, having consistently achieved groundbreaking milestones and introduced innovative approaches that significantly impact both the sector and Nigeria’s broader economy. These milestones, realised within a remarkably short timeframe, underscore our commitment to excellence and our proactive role in shaping the industry landscape.

Pioneering Oil Production: Platform Petroleum made history by being the first among the awardees in the 2003/2004 marginal field bid round to achieve the first oil production in 2007. This early success not only showcased our operational efficiency but also demonstrated our ability to swiftly translate exploration and development efforts into tangible results, contributing to the nation’s oil production capacity.

Gas Processing Plant and Market Supply: A key milestone in our journey was the successful construction and commissioning of a 30 million standard cubic feet per day (scfd) gas processing plant. This state-of-the-art facility plays a pivotal role in supplying Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and lean gas to domestic markets. By venturing into the gas processing domain, we have not only diversified our revenue streams but have also made substantial contributions to meeting the country’s energy demands and reducing reliance on traditional fuel sources.

Virtually Eliminating Gas Flaring: Platform Petroleum has been at the forefront of sustainable and environmentally responsible practices by virtually eliminating gas flaring in our operations. Through the installation of advanced gas compression systems and facilities necessary for full gas commercialisation, we have reduced gas flaring to less than 1%. This achievement aligns with global efforts to minimise environmental impact and demonstrates our commitment to responsible resource utilisation.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiatives: Our commitment to the motto “Enterprise based on best practices and social responsibility” extends beyond operational excellence. Platform Petroleum actively engages in social and educational development projects within our host communities and beyond. This includes supporting initiatives that enhance education, healthcare, and overall community well-being. In summary, Platform Petroleum Limited’s milestones and innovative approaches have not only positioned us as a leader in the Oil and Gas Sector but have also made significant contributions to Nigeria’s economic development. Through pioneering oil production, gas processing, environmental stewardship, and impactful CSR initiatives, we continue to shape the industry’s future while positively influencing the communities we serve.

How government can address Oil and Gas Sector’s challenges, fast-track economic development

The Oil and Gas Sector in Nigeria faces a significant challenge marked by the frequent outage and vandalisation of crude oil pipelines. These crucial arteries transport crude from producing assets to export terminals and local refineries. Addressing this challenge is paramount for unlocking the full potential of the sector and catalysing economic development and wealth creation for the nation.

Firstly, we need to Enhance Security Architecture. A critical step that the government needs to take involves a comprehensive overhaul and strengthening of the security architecture surrounding the oil and gas infrastructure. This includes pipelines that are essential for the transportation of crude oil. The frequent disruptions due to vandalism not only result in financial losses but also undermine investor confidence. By bolstering security measures, the government can create a more secure and stable environment for oil and gas investments. This, in turn, will make Nigeria a more attractive destination for both domestic and foreign investors.

Secondly, create an enabling Environment for Investment. Government plays a pivotal role in creating an enabling environment that fosters investment in the oil and gas sector. Beyond addressing security concerns, streamlining regulatory processes, ensuring policy consistency, and minimising bureaucratic hurdles are essential. A transparent and investor-friendly regulatory framework will encourage both upstream and midstream investments, attracting capital that can drive technological advancements and operational efficiency.

Third is Permanent Resolution of Pipeline Vandalisation. A lasting solution to the issue of pipeline vandalisation is imperative. The government should employ a multifaceted approach, incorporating intelligence gathering, technology utilisation, and collaboration with local communities to address the root causes of this problem. Implementing effective surveillance and response mechanisms will deter vandals and ensure the uninterrupted flow of crude oil, facilitating a more stable and predictable operating environment for the industry.

The fourth one is Stimulating Investments in Upstream and Midstream Sectors. Once the government successfully addresses and resolves the challenge of pipeline outage and vandalisation, it will pave the way for a significant uptick in investments in both the upstream and midstream sectors. Investors are more likely to commit capital when they have confidence in the security and reliability of the infrastructure. This, in turn, will lead to increased exploration, production, and transportation of oil and gas resources, fostering economic development and wealth creation.

In conclusion, the government’s proactive measures to enhance security, create an enabling investment environment, and permanently resolve pipeline challenges are essential steps to fast-track economic development in the oil and gas sector. By providing a secure and stable landscape, Nigeria can attract the necessary investments to unlock the vast potential of its energy resources, contributing to sustained economic growth and wealth creation for the nation.

Ibidapo Lawal, Managing Director/CEO, Neveah Limited

“Investments in Agriculture, Agro-Commodities Export Will Boost Nigeria’s Economy” – Lawal

He is a highly resourceful and experienced business leader who has demonstrated his worth of experience in the commodities exportation sector in Nigeria. Ibidapo Lawal, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Nevaeh Limited typifies the can do ability of outstanding professionals who see opportunities in challenging environment, it is not a surprise that his entrepreneural engagements is inspiring young Nigerians towards achieving personal goals.

On how he nurtured the company from a humble beginning to a world-class exporter of quality agro-commodities and minerals, he said “ We are going to be 10 years next year. However, it has not been easy, but over time we have been able to follow certain strategies and moved forward. One of the things we have successfully done is to access alternative source of financing, which is not conventional, to grow our business. One of the things we did in 2021 was to access working capital from the capital market in form of commercial papers, and that actually helped to scale up our business. I can remember when we wanted to do what  some people said it was actually for big companies like Nigeria Breweries, Flour Mills and others, but we dared it and now it is working for us.

Proud of Nevaeh Limited’s corporate journey, Ibidapo said that Nevaeh was intentional about what it wanted to achieve. According to him, “We are the first indigenous company in Nigeria that actually registered a commercial paper programme in the export space; this actually helped  a lot to scale up our business. When we tried to put transaction parties together, some people said it was not possible, but we did our first commercial paper programme in 2021 and it was for N10 billion then. We raised our first money, which was N2.7 billion. We, then, looked for another N2 billion and got 2.7 billion there about, and with that money we were able to grow the business to where we are today. Other things we have done include to work with reputable brands such as in consulting firms — for auditing, we worked with good firms that gave us the right advise on what to do. On legal matters, we looked for law firms that can give us the right advise that would enable us take the right decisions.

I would say that Nigeria is actually a place that is full of opportunities. The first thing is not giving up. When we started this company, we had a lot of challenges and the first thing we exported to Vietnam was ‘Kosowood.’ We, then, had issues with our containers, which were stocked at the port for three months. However, instead of outsourcing our freight forwarding the export, we decided at that time to build our own place. So, we employed a few people, sent them on training to understand how the forwarding is done and now, that issue is solved. We had issues at one point in 2016/2017, when we exported about 36 containers of hibiscus flower to Mexico and the 36 containers had issues because the containers were wet; so, the hibiscus flower became a bit moist. I was in the United States of America, when the containers came back to Nigeria and I had to return to Nigeria to crosscheck the whole process. That experience taught us to engage moisture analyzers to always crosscheck the moisture of any products before export. This is to make sure that the products meet the required international standard.

We have an interesting programme for our 10th anniversary that will hold either on April 30 or June 2024 in Ogun State. We are going to unveil a project that could boost the nation’s revenue to the tune of $100 million yearly. It is a recycling plan that will produce about 36,000 tons of aluminum and 3000 tons copper yearly. This is over $100 million project will be added to our export business. With Nigeria’s total export being about $5 billion a year, our project will make a very significant contribution to the whole sum. The project on itself will contribute about two per cent, while our agro-business and other ancillary businesses will make up the one per cent, this was the reason I said, Neveah will handle about three per cent of the nation’s non-oil export for 2024″, he added.

Ibidapo Lawal opined that the Nigerian government can create more employments by implementing policies that will ease the operations of commodities exporters and encourage agricultural practice. His words  “Last year, we were in Germany and France, and our company was the only Nigerian company that had a boot; I mean a proper boot. Countries including Egypt, Brazil, U.S. had boots. In fact, Egypt had a massive exhibition pavilion. I have never seen a Nigerian pavilion at these events. Government needs to bring stakeholders in the sector together to showcase Nigerian’s products to the world. Let other countries’ businessmen pay to have boots in the Nigerian pavilion; this will encourage our exporters to showcase cocoa and our other local products. Government needs to put in place policies and incentives that can actually encourage people to go back to agriculture, farming and producing raw materials for export and our local factories.

Mobolaji Okoya, Managing Director/CEO, Septem VII Investment Limited

Why Govt needs to boost economy through PPP, integration, local consumption, Okoya

Mobolaji Okoya, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Septem VII Nigeria Limited, in a recent chat with The Guardian took a delve into the Nigerian economy, highlighting some of the challenges in the manufacturing sector and also proffering solutions on how the sector can get out of the woods, create jobs and boost the economy.

Emphasising the importance of encouraging integration — backward and forward — through Public-Private-Partnerships (PPP), the astute administrator and investor said, this will not only enhance export opportunities, but would also position the country for growth.

Explaining why he is in business, the son of a multi-billionaire and business mogul said: “I come from an industrial setting; the Eleganza industries, and we have been in the manufacturing sector since my youth. However, I am propelled to be in business because of the passion or eagerness to provide service and meet people’s needs. I noticed that Nigeria is a blessed country, and the key to survival, especially in times of foreign exchange shortage, lay in the production our goods locally. Instead of purchasing items with dollars, we can create them here.

“Also, the passion for service is crucial. We aim to serve the people and the community, providing what they need. Having a passion for service and meeting people’s demand can make one wealthy. This has been my driving force. As a business head, Okoya absolutely believes that professionalism among the workforce is the backbone of any successful business.

According to him: “In Septem VII, we prioritise professionalism at all levels and this has not only reflected in the company’s survival, but also in the quality of its products in the different markets within Nigeria and across the West Africa.

“ These professional ensure sound decisions and financial stability. By upholding high standards, the company has contributed to enhancing Nigeria’s global image and economic strength. The commitment to professionalism does not only benefit the company, but also foster a positive perception of Nigeria’s capabilities at the international scene.”

Leveraging on technology and well-trained workforce, Septem VII headman disclosed that his organisation is proactively thriving through innovation to provide the people’s need. Aside this, the company is working to implement a computerised system for real-time pricing in inventory control, along with continuous staff training to stay globally competitive.

“We are positioning our staff and organisation in response to happenings across the world. In response to Forex challenges, manufacturers have to focus on how to source their raw materials locally and also to make the people consume locally manufactured goods. This will reduce dependence on foreign products, create more jobs and boost the nation’s economy.

“Septem VII specialises in the production of different categories of paint; beginning from the low end to the high-end. We produce industrial paint, including high quality marine paint. The company pays premium on quality, while its prices are pocket friendly.”

Apart from expanding into real estate and the manufacturing of building materials, Septem VII currently lays emphasises on the manufacture of paints, which comes in three ranges — the economic, standard and premium.

“Our products are of high quality. We sourced for the best quality raw materials and engaged some of the best hands in the sector. This has automatically snowballed into the quality products we have today in the market. In fact, we did not just assembled a team, we recruited experts from different fields. The combination of these elements has given us the confidence to compete successfully with any leading brand not just in Nigeria, but across the global,” he said.

To fast-track economic development, create wealth and attract foreign investors in the country, Okoya called on government to provide consistent and affordable power for the manufacturing sector and as well create enabling environment, including coming up with policies, that would make investors get value for their investment.

“Another thing our government should do is to create a source where manufacturers can have easy accessible fund. Current challenges, where traders have easier access to funds than manufacturers needs to be looked into and changed for good. Harmonising state, federal, and local government taxes, reducing hidden costs, and streamlining processes would significantly improve business environment. Government-led initiatives, strengthened by agencies like SON, can enforce standardization and ensure locally produced goods meet international standards. Educating consumers and eliminating inferior products will contribute to the growth of our local companies.

“Lastly, emphasis should be on quality labour. We should focus on having more of skilled and qualified workforce across professions. This will help serve the industries and also save us some foreign exchange spent on foreign experts,” he noted.

Harping on other ways to motivate local manufacturers, Okoya called on governments at all levels to also patronise local manufacturers, saying government agencies and departments depending on foreign products to equip their offices and at their event is counter-productive and a pull back on the nation’s economic growth and development.

According to the investor, government is one of the biggest buyers of any product and a situation where its agencies fail to patronise local manufacturers, saying their products are below standard make mockery of our local economy, adding that when they buy local, they boost the economy and create more jobs.

“Government should foster collaborations with private firms by allowing Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) for both backward and forward integration. Encouraging local production through taxation and promoting local consumption. Standardisation by agencies like NAFDAC and SON is crucial to maintain product quality and facilitate exports across West Africa. While building local capacity enables local manufacturers to expand and develop the potential to compete globally, envisioning exports beyond Nigeria,” he stated.
