Total distributes 500 insecticide nets

AS part of activities to mark this year’s World Malaria Day and to boost efforts in eradicating Malaria in Lagos and Nigeria, Total Nigeria Plc, last week, partnered with Ibafon Community to provide long lasting insecticide treated nets to 500 households within the host community.

The project, facilitated by Kasher Consulting Ltd, featured community awareness, sensitization and teaching the residents of the Lagos suburb how to effectively hang and use insecticide treated nets.

The campaign, which was tagged: ‘Net it out’ is an initiative of Total Nigeria. During the campaign, employees of Total, comprising the upstream and downstream sectors of the oil giant, distributed and helped in the hanging of treated nets. This was done alongside dissemination of information, education and communication (IEC) materials to the members of the community as well as to all Total Service stations nationwide to educate all and sundry about malaria prevention and treatment.

The Deputy General Manager, Policy, Media and Coordination, Total Nigeria, Mr. Charles Ogan, said that the use of treated net each night is one of the most effective ways to prevent malaria.

“Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs) have been proven to be one of the most effective malaria vector control methods available to date. Studies in Africa have reported a 63 per cent reduction in overall child mortality resulting from the use of the nets,” he quoted the World Health Organisation.

Ogan also said the campaign is in line with the group’s directive and part of Total’s Corporate Social Responsibility to its host communities.
