Gokada targets 80 per cent increase to ease traffic
This, the firm said, will be possible by increasing its registered 1,000 motorcycles and riders to 5,000 by December.
Speaking at the formal launch of the new Gokada App in Lagos, Chief Executive Officer of Gokada, Deji Oduntan, said the 80 per cent boost will change the face of transportation in Nigeria, and subsequently in Africa.
Oduntan added that Gokada since inception in 2017, has operated as an on-demand motorbike hailing service, aimed at leveraging technology to help users connect to the nearest motorbikes within their areas and beat the traffic.
“Gokada operates within the Yaba Mainland axis and recently extended its operations to the Victoria Island and Lekki axis in Lagos,” he said.
Projecting that more cities in Nigeria would be added soon, Oduntan said the company was borne out of the need to empower Nigerians through jobs creation.
“Gokada has created job opportunities for the unemployed and underplayed by providing them motorcycles, helmets, hairnets, and a phone, while they pay a certain amount daily. The motorcycle later becomes theirs after a year,” he said.
On safety measures, Oduntan said the riders undergo certain training before they are registered, and have in place a comprehensive insurance for customers and riders in case of accidents.
Speaking on the new App, he said the firm was using Gokada Lite App, which served as a stop gap before the upgraded version was ready.
“Although, the Gokada Lite eliminates the use of heavy data, it was not comprehensive enough to meet our customers’ need. So, we decided to launch the ‘Gokada App’, to ease operations between the rider, customers and the firm.
“At present, no fewer than 100,000 customers have downloaded the new app,” Oduntan said.
