The University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) is to begin an Antibiotic Stewardship Programme to curb abuse of antibiotics in the hospital and make it a model for others in the country.

While condemning prevalent cases of abuse of administration of antibiotics on patients in hospitals, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. A. D. Yussuf, said although abuse of prescriptions of antibiotics is a global trend, there was an urgent need to review the development in order to save lives.

He stated this at the hospital’s 2018 Grand Round event anchored by the Department of Microbiology.

Yussuf, a renowned Professor of Behavioural Science, was reacting to a Report on Global Point Prevalence Survey of Antibiotics Prescription Pattern in UITH through his representative, Acting Deputy C-MAC Training and Education, Dr. Abiodun Adeniran, insisting that a holistic approach to the issue would stop the ugly trend.
