Varsity to actualise FG policies on agric, food security

The Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofor Iwe, has assured of his administration’s readiness to actualise the Federal Government policies and programmes, especially on agriculture, food security and education.
  
“My vision is to be responsive to the agricultural needs of Nigeria and the mantra of agricultural evolution by the Buhari administration by seeking to excel in accomplishing urgent strategic and empowering activities.”
  
Iwe, a professor of Food Science and Technology who spoke after his inauguration as the sixth VC of the institution, said he would achieve the target by applying what he called mixed-bag strategies that include mixed farming on the several University’s lands, to progressively enhance the efficiency of land utilisation for the participation of staff and students in farming and agricultural production.
 


His other plans include, integrating commercial cropping of high value tree crops, maximizing value chain through preservation, processing and marketing, establishment of an agro packaging center for attractive presentation to the public.
  
According to the VC, the university will focus on its core values to achieve new progressives, accommodating and enduring university to produce self-sufficient, confident and competent educated farmers and self-sufficiency in food and fiber production for Nigeria.
