Visa on arrival and waived visa fee for a thirty-day stay in Rwanda

In total, eighty-six countries ranging from Albania to Zimbabwe get the visa upon arrival and waived visa fees for a stay of thirty days.

On Tuesday, January 21 2020, the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame during a speech about Rwanda’s transformation and the East African nation’s journey at the International School for Government at Kings College in London, United Kingdom, said there would be a new visa regime which would scrap visa fees for over ninety member states of the African Union, the Commonwealth and the Francophonie for a 30-day stay.

And on Tuesday, March 10 2020, Rwanda’s Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration made it official by releasing Rwanda’s new visa regime which is an update of the existing visa regime of Friday, June 21 2019.

The updates amongst other things state that citizens of countries, members to African Union, Commonwealth and La Francophonie will benefit from the new policy.

According to the official statement, citizens of countries that do not need to pay entry visa fees whilst travelling on ordinary passports to be granted a 90 day visa-free of charge are Angola, Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, The Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, Ghana, Guinea, Indonesia, Haiti, Mauritius, Philippines, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Sao Tome and Principe, Qatar and Singapore.

It is also stated that citizens of the East African Community will not pay entry visa fees while travelling on ordinary, service and diplomatic passports. These passport holders would be issued an entry visa to stay for up to six months.

Citizens of nations not mentioned in the list released by parastatal will continue to receive a thirty-day visa upon arrival without prior application which is accompanied by a prescribed visa fee.

The new visa regime which went into effect on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, for travellers to Rwanda was experienced by a Nigerian, who informed this writer that no visa fee was paid upon arrival from Lagos at the Kigali International Airport on the night of Tuesday, March 10, 2020.
