Aremu Oluwashola Ruth discusses the importance of leveraging technology and leadership in crisis management

In this interview, we chatted with Procurement expert Aremu Oluwashola, who delved into how machine learning algorithms can impact the industry.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and explain how your journey has shaped your career in procurement?
Thank you for the privilege. My name is Aremu Oluwashola Ruth, and I was born and raised in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), where I gained a strong foundation in resource allocation, market dynamics, and decision-making processes. This was pivotal in sparking my interest in procurement. I later pursued a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Nasarawa State University, where I developed leadership, strategic management, and problem-solving skills, all of which shaped my career as a procurement professional.

My academic journey gave me a unique blend of economic insight and business acumen, allowing me to navigate procurement’s complexities with a strategic, data-driven approach. My roles in both the healthcare and public sectors exposed me to real-world challenges in supply chain management, where I applied analytical tools to optimize procurement processes and ensure organizational efficiency. This combination of theory and practical experience has defined my career, and I continue to seek innovative ways to improve procurement systems, including the application of technologies like machine learning to predict procurement outcomes.

We are aware of your exploit with FCMLST in producing sanitizers during the pandemic. Can you share what motivated you to take on the significant task at that time?
During the pandemic, my motivation to take on the task of producing sanitizers for a large portion of Northern Nigeria was driven by the urgent need to support the community and mitigate the spread of COVID-19. As the Procurement Manager at the Federal College of Medical Laboratory Science and Technology. I saw an opportunity to leverage my procurement expertise to source the necessary raw materials efficiently, ensuring timely production and distribution. The knowledge that our work would directly help safeguard public health fueled my determination to succeed despite supply chain challenges.

What strategies did you implement to ensure the successful acquisition of the necessary raw materials, given the market shortages during the pandemic?
To overcome the market shortages during the pandemic, I implemented several strategies. First, I leveraged my network of suppliers, negotiating directly with those who had access to essential raw materials. I also diversified our supplier base, identifying alternative vendors in different regions to mitigate the risk of shortages. Additionally, I introduced an agile procurement approach, allowing us to act quickly on market opportunities. Finally, I used data-driven tools to forecast demand and track market fluctuations, ensuring that we could make timely purchases despite fluctuating availability and prices.

What were the challenges you faced in distributing the sanitizers across northern Nigeria, and how did you overcome them?
Distribution was one of the most challenging aspects due to the sheer size of the region and infrastructural limitations. We faced issues like poor road networks and logistical barriers. To overcome this, we coordinated with local government agencies and health departments, who helped facilitate transportation. We also used a hub-and-spoke distribution model, where sanitizers were sent to central points and then distributed further into more remote areas. This collaborative approach was key to our success.

What do you believe sets your approach to procurement apart, particularly in times of crisis like a pandemic?
I believe adaptability is critical. Procurement is about more than just purchasing; it’s about anticipating needs, managing risks, and creating strategic partnerships. During a crisis, procurement managers must be agile and innovative. My focus has always been on creating value through sustainable, long-term solutions, not just quick fixes. I also emphasize transparency and ethical practices, ensuring that every decision supports the broader goal of public health improvement.

In what way do you believe advancements in technology can improve the procurement industry, and what role do you see yourself playing in this transformation?
Advancements in technology, particularly in areas like machine learning, can revolutionize procurement by improving supplier evaluation, predicting demand, and optimizing delivery times. These tools enable data-driven decisions, allowing for better resource allocation, reduced lead times, and enhanced risk management. I see myself playing a key role in this transformation by researching and implementing machine learning solutions to forecast procurement needs and streamline supply chains. By integrating these technologies, I aim to enhance efficiency, transparency, and cost-effectiveness within procurement processes.

What projects or research are you currently working on in procurement that could impact the industry?
I’m currently researching how to apply machine learning algorithms to optimize procurement timing. The idea is to predict when supplies will be needed based on historical data, market trends, and demand fluctuations. By improving procurement timing, we can reduce lead times, avoid stockouts, and minimize excess inventory. This research is aimed at ensuring that organizations have the right materials at the right time, ultimately enhancing supply chain efficiency and cost management.

Do you have any advice for younger procurement officers?
My advice to younger procurement officers is to focus on building strong relationships with suppliers, continuously seek to learn about market trends, and embrace technology early on. Stay proactive and adaptable, especially in times of market volatility. Always aim to understand the entire supply chain, not just procurement, and consider innovative tools like data analytics or machine learning to enhance your processes. Lastly, keep honing your negotiation and communication skills, as they are crucial in navigating challenges and achieving long-term success in procurement.
