Staying out of the sun is the best way to avoid sun-damaged skin. However, there are times when we absolutely have to venture outdoors. Implementing a few sun safety practices can significantly lower your risk of sun damage.

Here are five simple tips to protect your skin while enjoying the sun:

Use sunscreen, even on cloudy days

All sunscreens carry a specific Sun Protection Factor (SPF) number that indicates how effectively they block ultraviolet (UV) rays. The higher the number, the greater the protection. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 or higher.

A product labelled “broad spectrum” means the sunscreen filters out both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. While UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, causing premature aging and increasing the risk of skin cancer, UVB rays affect the surface and are responsible for sunburn.

Apply sunscreen to every exposed part of your body, including the back of your ears. And never forget — reapplication is key!

Sunglasses to the rescue

Sunglasses are not just fashion accessories; they can also help protect your eyes from UV rays. Additionally, they shield the delicate skin around your eyes.

When purchasing sunglasses, always look for lenses that offer UV protection. Remember, darker lenses do not necessarily provide UV protection, so be sure to check the label before buying. Furthermore, large-framed or wraparound sunglasses offer more sun protection.

Consider Your Outfit

Tightly woven clothing provides the best protection. Opt for long sleeves, long trousers, and skirts — essentially, wear outfits that cover your skin, as exposure leaves you vulnerable to sun damage.

Some clothes certified under international standards are specifically manufactured to provide UV protection. Keep in mind that a typical T-shirt has an SPF rating lower than 15, so use additional forms of protection as well.

Wear a Hat

A hat with a brim all the way around will protect your face, ears, and neck from the sun while keeping you stylish-bonus point! Tightly woven fabrics, such as canvas, offer the best protection from UV rays.

Avoid straw hats with holes that allow sunlight to penetrate. If you opt for a baseball cap, be sure to protect your ears and the back of your neck with sunscreen, of course!

Take Shade!

If you must be out in the sun, make an effort to find some shade to reduce your risk of sun damage. Even when you are under shade, go the extra mile by using your sunscreen or wearing protective clothing.
