Heven Haile from Pitchfork praised the song as a “slick club anthem” reminiscent of mid-2000s Ciara and Rihanna. Tyla later supported Chris Brown as the opening act for his Under the Influence tour.

In May 2023, she dropped “Girl Next Door,” featuring Nigerian singer Ayra Starr.

July 2023 saw the release of Water,” the lead single from her self-titled debut album, Ttyla. The track gained massive popularity with a viral dance challenge on TikTok and hit the top 10 charts in countries like South Africa, the US, and the UK.

With “Water,” Tyla became the youngest South African solo artist in 55 years to enter the US Billboard Hot 100, following Hugh Masekela’s 1968 hit “Grazing in the Grass.”
