Travelling solo can be very exciting and rewarding. It allows you to explore new places at your own pace and immerse yourself in different cultures. However, it is important to prioritise your safety when travelling alone.

Embrace the experience with an open mind and a spirit of adventure. Here are some safety tips:

Research your destination: Before embarking on your journey, it is important to conduct thorough research about the place you’re visiting. Learn about local customs, traditions and laws. Familiarise yourself with potential risks, such as high-crime areas or common scams targeting tourists. By being informed, you will be able to make better decisions and minimise potential risks.

Share your itinerary: Getting a few people involved in the travel plans is certainly not a bad idea. Inform a trusted friend or family member about your travel plans, including your itinerary, accommodation details and contact information. Regularly, update them on your whereabouts and any changes to your plans. In case of emergencies, they will know how to come for you.

Stay connected: Carry a reliable communication device with you, such as a mobile phone or a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. This will enable you to stay connected with others, access maps, and contact emergency services if needed. Keep important contact numbers, including those of local emergency services and your embassy, saved on your phone.

Trust your instincts: This is one of the most important because your intuition is a powerful tool for self-protection. If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable about a situation or an environment, trust your gut and remove yourself from that environment. Be aware of your surroundings and observe the behaviour of those around you.

Secure your belongings: Keep your belongings secure at all times. Invest in a sturdy and reliable lock for your luggage. When you are exploring, carry only essential items and keep valuables like your passport, credit cards and cash in a secure money belt or hidden pouch under your clothing.

Use safe transportation: Ensure to make use of reputable transportation services when travelling, such as licensed taxis or ride-sharing apps. If using public transportation, be cautious of your surroundings, especially during crowded periods. Avoid travelling alone late at night and use well-lit and busy routes.

Be cautious with strangers: While it’s great to meet new people during your travels, exercise caution when interacting with strangers. Be careful of those who approach you with unsolicited offers or excessive friendliness. Avoid sharing personal details or disclosing information about your accommodations.

Stay in well-reviewed accommodations: Ensure that you do your research about accommodations and choose the ones with positive reviews and a good reputation. Check the safety features, such as secure entrances, 24/7 reception, and cameras. Also, always lock doors and windows.

Remember, while it’s important to be cautious, don’t let fear paralyse your enjoyment of solo travel. By being prepared, taking certain precautions, and following these essential guidelines, you can enhance your safety and peace of mind while having an enjoyable and unforgettable solo travel experience.
