At the 97th Academy Awards, Ariana Grande Butera, better known as Ariana Grande, delivered a captivating performance of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, in a burgundy gown, setting an emotional tone for the evening.

The ceremony, themed community and spirit, honours the city Los Angeles, after a wildfire left at least 29 dead and thousands of homes destroyed earlier this year 2025.

Grande’s portrayal of Glinda in the film adaptation of “Wicked” has garnered critical acclaim, earning her nominations for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTA Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

This marks her first Oscar nomination, highlighting her seamless transition from music to film.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow, originally performed by Judy Garland in the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz,” has become an enduring symbol of hope and dreams. Grande’s interpretation paid homage to this legacy, resonating deeply with the audience.

The 2025 Oscars is celebrating cinematic achievements amidst challenges, with films like Netflix’s “Emilia Pérez” leading with 13 nominations, despite controversies surrounding its lead actress. Other notable contenders included Sean Baker’s “Anora” and “Conclave,” both vying for Best Picture.

Grande’s performance, alongside Cynthia Erivo, who sang “Home,” served as a poignant tribute to Los Angeles, blending classic melodies with contemporary artistry. Their collaboration culminated in a powerful duet of “Defying Gravity” from Wicked, earning a standing ovation and setting a high bar for the night’s festivities.

Throughout her career, Grande has amassed numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album and multiple MTV Video Music Awards. Her venture into acting, particularly with “Wicked,” showcases her versatility and dedication to her craft.

Grande’s opening performance at the Oscars not only honoured a timeless song but also underscored her evolution as a multifaceted artist, leaving an indelible mark on the 97th Academy Awards.
