Pop sensation Billie Eilish recently experienced a significant drop in Instagram followers after openly discussing her sexuality during Variety’s annual Hitmakers Brunch event. The Grammy Award-winning artist confirmed she is queer while responding to questions about the magazine’s Power of Women issue.

In the candid interview, Eilish revealed being “attracted to women,” expressing surprise that the revelation was not already obvious. “No, I didn’t. But I kind of thought, ‘Wasn’t it obvious?’ I didn’t realize people didn’t know,” shared the 21-year-old singer. Eilish emphasized her hesitation about the concept of “coming out,” stating, “I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just exist?’ I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.”

Following her openness about her sexuality, Eilish faced a notable decline in Instagram followers, losing 117,750 within the last 30 days, with a significant drop on December 3. The day after her red carpet interview, she reportedly lost 40,428 followers, as reported by Latestly.

Expressing a mix of surprise and relief, Eilish noted, “I saw the article, and I was like, oh… I guess… I came out today! OK cool.” Despite the unexpected disclosure, she found excitement in people learning more about her authentic self. “But it’s cool that they know. Ooh, I’m nervous talking about it! But… I am for the girls,” she added.

Addressing Variety’s coverage in a previous Instagram post, Eilish thanked the magazine for the award but expressed dissatisfaction with being “outed” on the red carpet. Alongside a set of images, she stated, “Thanks Variety for my award and for also outing me on a red carpet at 11 am instead of talking about anything else that matters. I like boys and girls, leave me alone about it, please. Literally who cares. Stream ‘What Was I Made For.'”
