South African sensation Tyla stole the show at the 30th MTV Europe Music Awards held in Manchester, United Kingdom, on Sunday, as she walked away with three major trophies.

Tyla, whose full name is Tyla Seethal, outshined Nigerian heavyweights like Asake, Tems, Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr, clinching the Best Afrobeats Artist award.

But Tyla didn’t stop there. She scooped the Best African Act award, once again surpassing Ayra Starr, Asake, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe, and Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz.

Tyla added a third trophy to her night, taking home the Best R&B Artist award over international icons like Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monét.

Tyla closed out her night by performing an acoustic version of her hit song, Water, leaving fans mesmerised.

On the other hand, Nigerian pop princess Ayra Starr left the ceremony without any trophies despite being nominated in four categories: Best African Act, Best New Artist, Best Afrobeats Artist, and Best Push.

In her speech, Tyla acknowledged the role Afrobeats has played in elevating African music globally, saying, “I am so honoured to be winning these awards. I want to thank my team, my family, the tigers for voting for me. Thanks to Afrobeats. Afrobeats has opened so many doors for African music.”

It’s worth recalling that in September 2024, the 22-year-old singer voiced her thoughts on the Western tendency to lump all African music into the Afrobeats genre, emphasising that Africa’s musical diversity goes beyond Afrobeats alone.
