Catch Up: Events That Shaped The Previous Week
It’s become rather common in recent times to have a week with two extremes. Last week, we saw many cast a doubt on love as fairy-tales ended.
Catch up on the trending stories that made the week:
Kanye West has made his split from Kim Kardashian West Instagram official via his social media. The rapper briefly unfollowed the SKIMS founder and former wife on Instagram. If you are yet to follow him on Instagram, it’s too late now as he has made his account private. Last month, West released his 10th studio album, Donda. The project includes multiple references to his relationship with his estranged wife, including one song in particular, “Hurricane,” which seems to hint that West cheated on Kardashian West after their first two children were born.
How the mighty has fallen
A former R.Kelly backup dancer, Angela, has testified that she witnessed the disgraced singer perform a sexual act on the late R&B singer Aaliyah when she was underage. She said she saw him performing oral sex on Aaliyah during a tour in either 1992 or 1993, when the singer was just 12 or 13 years old.
Angela is the 10th accuser to testify against Kelly over the past three weeks. She said that she was either 14 or 15 years old when she first met Kelly and the singer had sexual intercourse with her for the first time that night.
Glitz and glamour
The 2021 Met Gala was the talk of the week and some notable faces that we looked forward to such as Beyonce and Cardi B were missing. However, we had Rihanna, the red carpet queen show up in an exaggerated ruffle dress, taking a duvet semblance. It was also the season of love as Rihanna and ASAP Rocky made the rug carpet officially as a couple, J.Lo and Ben Affleck, Justin and Hailey Bieber showed up giving us some PDAs. Kim Kardashian attended the carpet with a mystery man who later turned to be Demna Gvasalia, the creative director of Balenciaga. Plus, Nigeria’s very own Jackie Aina graced the stage as a black Barbie in pink.
“Na our own”
Nigerian musician, 2Baba Idibia, has called on Nigerian educationists to take the pidgin English seriously. He wrote on his Twitter page that the English-based creole language spoken as a lingua franca across Nigeria is the variety of the English language that is commonly acceptable in the country. Calling on Professors of Linguistics, he noted that the language should be “packaged”. There has been calls in the past to adopt pidgin as the national language. Writing icons, Professors Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe also used the language in their writings.
Congratulations are in order for Uzo Aduba, star of the “Orange Is The New Black” series who revealed she secretly got married last year. The Emmy-winning actress tied the knot with filmmaker Robert Sweeting last year in a secret ceremony. Aduba, 40, shared a photo of herself dressed in white along with Sweeney in a navy tuxedo, quoting a memorably romantic line from When Harry Met Sally,
“For some of us, it can feel like we spend our whole lives waiting for our special someone. My heart, my love — I’m so happy my life started last year with you. You’re the best thing that ever happened to me.”
