The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) has announced that all cinemas across the country are to reopen from Friday, 11th September 2020.

The decision came against the backdrop of the approval of the Presidential Task Force on COVID19, in an announcement made on 3rd September 2020.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigerian cinemas have been shut down since March 2020.

Whilst the federal government has now authorized the reopening of cinemas, there are still ongoing discussions with Lagos and Rivers state governments regarding reopening in those states.

However, CEAN has expressed optimism about reaching an agreement soon. It would be recalled that within the past two months, there have been trending conversations on both conventional and social media platforms about the delayed resumption of cinemas.

Speaking about the reopening, the Chairman of CEAN, Mr. Patrick Lee, expressed gratitude to the federal government,

“We are thankful to the federal government and the National Film & Video Censors Board (NFVCB) for considering our appeal to reopen. It has been an excruciating experience for cinema operators, having to endure the hardship imparted by the delayed closure. We look forward to welcoming movie-going Nigerians to cinemas, as we have prepared to not only ensure their safety but to also provide the needed content that would help in recuperating minds from the negative impact of the pandemic,” he said.

As we look forward to the opening of cinemas tomorrow this Friday, here are movies that we are excited about.

Mulan

Mulan

Mulan | Variety

Disney’s much-delayed blockbuster “Mulan” skipped the big screen and premiered on streaming platform Disney+ earlier this month. Tenet, Mama Drama, Unroyal, and Soft Work, to mention a few. The lavish $200 million film about a legendary female Chinese warrior was due to hit movie theaters in March, but became an early victim of the coronavirus pandemic, with multiple release date delays.

Mulan is based on a 1,500-year-old Chinese ballad about a young girl who takes her ailing father’s place in the imperial army.  Initial reviews have been cautiously positive, with many praising the film’s stunning visuals and willingness to depart from the animation, but some criticizing a lack of character depth or humour.

Delayed three times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tenet was released in the United Kingdom on August 26, 2020, and United States on September 3, 2020.

Mama Drama is loosely based on true life events and addresses the sensitive issues of infertility, surrogacy, and intertribal marriages. If there is a takeaway emotion from the myriad of emotions that Mama Drama elicits, it is that there is always hope at the end of every dark tunnel.

Directed by Darasen Richards, “Soft Work” is centered on a heist targeted at Chief Ademuyiwa, an accomplished businessman with over eighteen companies, whose success is attributed to a code. One of his business rivals wants the code, so he orchestrates a plan involving a group of unwilling conmen to steal it at a coronation ceremony of the chief.
