An international DJ of Nigerian origin based in Miami, Dozie Udemadu popularly known as DJ Dozzy Ross has unequivocally reiterated the supremacy of Davido and Wizkid in the Nigerian music industry, stressing that they are the best music exports Nigeria can boast of right now. While acknowledging the contributions of many others, and citing D’Banj and defunct Psquare as the fore runners, the Anambra State-born master of the wheel, maintains that duo are ahead of the pack.

‘I think right now it’s Davido & Wizkid. But a lot of artists contributed to it. Artistes like Dbanj, Psquare, Tekno, Runtown actually helped paved the way. Davido put in a lot of work here in USA. He recently concluded his radio tour. I was present at his Miami radio tour two months back and he really did good at the interview, enlightening people about his music and Afrobeats,’ he said.

Speaking further in a phone chat with our reporter the DJ who was nominated at the 2015 Afrimma awards in Dallas as the best African DJ in USA, explains how the Americans have come to accept Nigerian music and how Davido, Wizkid and others, including him are part of the success story.

‘Now we are accepted in general as the new trend over here. Right now, it’s very popular and Americans are starting to love it. They love Davido, Wizkid and Burna Boy. We as DJs try to integrate Nigerian music as much as we can even when I’m disc jockeying in American spots. They love the sound and the fact our lyrics are mainly about love and money and not about crime or violence,” he said.

‘’It’s not been an easy road; hence I said I was one of the pioneers of Afrobeats music into the American music scene. But the past 2 years Americans became more open to Afrobeats, they come up to the DJs and requests songs by Davido and Wizkid. Then as a good DJ we integrate songs from Tekno, Burna Boy, Kizz Daniel etc to the mix. Our producers have found a great job right now; every one falls in love with the beat first so it makes up for songs without good lyrics. And most times we just tell them to go with the best because our lyrics are in different languages most of the time.

“I’ve worked with the likes of Davido, Olamide, Tekno, Wizkid, Runtown, Skales, Timaya, Psquare, Tiwa Savage, Don Jazzy, to name a few. Also, I worked with Akon and went on tour with him for his USA tour 2017. I’ve had so many memorable events but the highlight was going on a world tour with Wale and Akon. It was an amazing opportunity because I had to warm up the crowd before they performed. I was amazed when I played for a white crowd in Alabama and they knew the lyrics to most of the afrobeats songs I played

DJ Dozzy Ross is what you can call a professional DJ who got schooled by great minds in the craft. He trained in Atlanta by DJ D Cas of Connections DJs. He has a song with Tekno and Cap 1, an American rapper signed to 2 Chains. He is also working with Skales, Runtown and Ball Greezy. By summer of this year he will be hitting the town with an EP of six songs complete with videos. His song making a good round on the radio waves is ‘Rihanna Body’ featuring Tekno and Cap 1.
