Social media would be incomplete without content creators like Eriakha Edgar, who add humour and entertainment to the experience

A Theatre Art Graduate from the University of Lagos, Edgar is a screen, stage, and voice actor. A great screenwriter and content creator, he is well known for his unique voice and pranks that leave viewers laughing hard and wanting more.

Given his career, Edgar finds delight in research, communication and ‘making trouble’ like the prankster that he is. Guardian Life met up with Eriakha Edgar for a quick chat on his brand, content creation and social media.

  • TELL US A BIT ABOUT ERIAKHA EDGAR

My full name is Eriakha Oseiwe Edgar. I am from Edo state, Nigeria. I studied Performing Arts at the University of Lagos. I am a content creator, voice actor, standup comic, and a brand Influencer. I have featured in movies, short films, sketches, and different podcasts. I often say Edgar doesn’t lie. That’s the biggest lie in the world.

  • WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START MAKING COMEDY SKITS

There is beauty behind the madness. I have always loved comedy. Skits serve as a way of documenting my thoughts at the time. I am on a journey and comedy skit is a major part of it. My life is a comedy. There is something to always laugh about. I enjoy expressing myself.

  • A VERY DISTINCTIVE  FEATURE ABOUT YOU IS YOUR VOICE WHEN DID YOU REALISE YOUR DISTINCT VOICE?

A friend of mine once called me the VOICE OF THE DEVIL. To him, there is an attractive effect my voice has that compels you to listen, even if I am saying nonsense. When I heard that I was shocked. I couldn’t keep my voice away from social media anymore because everyone kept saying the same thing. You have a good voice, use it. So I decided to research how I could use my voice in different ways. By the way, I switch the voice a couple of times.

  • THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC CREATED A TREMENDOUS OPPORTUNITY FOR VIDEO CONTENT CREATORS ON SOCIAL MEDIA. HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO USE THIS TO GROW YOUR PLATFORM?

Before the pandemic hit, I was writing content. When the pandemic happened, I had to look for a way to create content at home, in my space. It was difficult but then I knew my only option was to create social experiments over the phone. I did some quick maths and started the series titled Phone pranks.

  • IN SOME OF YOUR SKITS, YOU PLAY PRANKS ON PEOPLE, HAS THIS AT ANY TIME GOTTEN YOU INTO TROUBLE? TELL US ABOUT IT.

(Laughs) Yes, it has. A lot of times. I see my content sometimes like the CIA. The pranks are real, people pay a lot of money to get it done. Some pranks end with laughter while others leave my mouth open for days. At the end of the day I am prepared for whatever, with God, my lawyer, and a pinch of luck, I would be fine.

  • HOW HAVE YOU MANAGED TO KEEP SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT FOR SO LONG?

The game of social media is all about impacts and numbers. I respect every creative doing great. Consistency is only easy to pronounce but with a good content calendar and networking, you will be fine. I have friends that are ready to do anything possible for me to get better. Surround yourself with people that love and respect you and see failure as a lesson and not a threat.

  • WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE OF SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCING AND SKIT MAKING IN NIGERIA, ESPECIALLY WITH SO MANY PEOPLE COMING OUT DAILY?

The world is a global village, social media influencing is only going to get bigger. So far social networks still exist, you would have great content creators. As for the numbers of creatives increasing daily, well I feel it’s like that everywhere in the world. The entertainment industry is a circle, people would come and people would go, it keeps going. Stay creative and you would win this game.

  • ASIDE FROM YOUR VOICE WHAT ELSE DO YOU THINK MAKES YOU STAND OUT?

It’s funny how I don’t see myself as unique or special. I am just a regular guy trying like every other regular guy doing regular things. Isn’t that regular? It’s the drive and belief for me, I look at my family and my family to be (my wife and children) and I tell myself I would make some people proud of the fact that they were on the earth with me. I don’t stand out, I sit at home and create content (don’t leave me).

  • WHAT OTHER THINGS ARE YOU UP TO FOR NOW?

I am presently working on my website.  The idea is to create a space where people can exclusively see my different content and know what’s happening with me. Also, I have a couple of short films to be released early next year. 2022 won’t be nice. I am dropping too much hot content to God’s glory. By the way, Edgar Eriakha doesn’t Lie.
