The city of Abeokuta, a historical stronghold of the Egbå people, is set to host the 2025 Égbáliganza, a spectacular celebration of culture, heritage and economic empowerment.

More than just an event, the festival, tagged:  “Walkway of Kings,” is scheduled to take place on April 5 and is envisioned as a movement and revival of the rich traditions, artistry, and sophistication that define the Egba people.

Égbáliganza, meaning “Egba the Great,” is deeply rooted in the history and identity of the Egba people.
The name itself is a fusion of Égbá, representing the proud and resilient people of Egbaland; Li, meaning
“the” in the Egba dialect; and Gánsà, a newly coined Yorùbá word created by the Lái Lábodé Heritage Foundation, signifying greatness, excellence, and sophistication.

In the Yorùbá language, which does not use the letter “Z,” the word is adapted as Egbáligánsà, reinforcing its deep cultural authenticity. This landmark event will showcase the richness of Egba traditions, blending history with modern influences.

A key highlight will be Egba Fashion, where the beauty of adire fabrics, intricately woven aso òkè, and regal agbádá will be on full display, merging tradition with contemporary styles.

Other highlights of the event include Egba Modern Art, a curated exhibition of paintings, sculptures, and installations that reflect the creativity and depth of Egba artistic expression as well as Egba Sophistication, which is a showcase of the refinement and excellence that characterize Egba culture, from regal traditions to modern achievements.

Also is the Made in Egbaland, a strong focus on local craftsmanship and entrepreneurship, supporting indigenous businesses and artisans.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos to herald the event,  the Osi Apagun of Egbaland and Founder of the Lai Labode Heritage Foundation, Chief Lai Labode, emphasised that Égbáliganza is not just a cultural celebration but also an economic catalyst.

He highlighted how the event would create opportunities for local businesses, fashion designers, textile makers, and the tourism industry.

“Egbáliganza is a declaration of pride and excellence. It is about telling our story in our own voice, celebrating our heritage, and opening new doors for economic growth. This is more than an event—it is a legacy in the making,” he stated.

Also speaking at the event, Chief Yemi Lawal, the Chairman of Égbáliganza and the Abese of Egba land, expressed deep pride in the resilience, wisdom, and historical contributions of the Egba people.

He emphasised that Égbáliganza is more than just a festival—it is a movement to ensure that Egba traditions endure despite modern influences.

He called for the active involvement of the younger generation in sustaining Egba culture, highlighting the need to preserve traditional attire, language, cuisine, music, and festivals.

Chief Yemi Lawal also acknowledged the dedication of community leaders, cultural icons, and all contributors who have played a role in the festival’s success.

“Our unity must continue to grow stronger, and the spirit of Egbáliganza must remain vibrant in all our hearts. With its fusion of heritage, innovation, and economic empowerment, Égbáliganza 2025 promises to be a defining moment in the cultural renaissance of the Egba people,” he concluded.
