For many, boarding school is more than a place to study—it’s a jungle of rivalry, survival, and unexpected drama. Nigerian actor, producer, and creator Bolu Essien captures this intense, character-shaping experience in her new project, Girls’ Hostel.

Set in a public girls’ school where reputation is power, the series follows Lara, the reigning queen of the hostel, whose authority is challenged when Ufoma arrives. Transferred after a mysterious scandal, Ufoma disrupts alliances and sparks new rivalries. As tensions rise, Lara discovers that Ufoma’s past hides a dangerous secret—one her parents would go to great lengths to protect—leaving viewers eager for more.

Speaking at the premiere in Lekki, Lagos, Essien, who also wrote and produced the show, revealed that the project has been in the works since 2022.

“I took my time to develop the show and source funding. Girls’ Hostel is like a baby I’ve been nurturing for years. It’s a fight for supremacy, and it mirrors real-life power dynamics, even in the workplace. Parents also need to pay attention—Lara seeks attention at school because she’s not getting it at home.”

The series premiered on YouTube, with partners including MTN and Cowbell, giving Essien the creative freedom to fully explore the story. The show is also scheduled for broadcast on Africa Magic.

Cast member Darasimi Ogbetah, who plays Aisha, shared her experience:

“Girls’ Hostel is nostalgic—it reminded me of secondary school. Filming was challenging because I had to step outside my comfort zone. One memorable school prank involved putting velvet beans in the water of a senior—we weren’t caught!”

Ogbetah believes the show offers lessons for students on navigating secondary school life, social dynamics, and education while living in a boarding environment.

Kate Daniel, Head of Sponsorship and Alliances at MTN, reflected on the energy and mischief of the series:
“Young adults have a lot of energy, and the show captures how they express it. Parents should know their children and guide them with discipline and balance. In the digital age, children need guidance more than just shock reactions—they need mentors who set boundaries.”

With Girls’ Hostel, Essien shines a light on the excitement, challenges, and life lessons of boarding school, creating a story that resonates with students, parents, and anyone who remembers the highs and lows of secondary school life.
