Filmhouse Group, in partnership with Shades of Life Care, held a sensory-friendly screening of Disney’s Lilo & Stitch at its Lekki cinema in celebration of Children’s Day.
The screening was tailored specifically for children with neurodiverse conditions and other special needs, with adjustments made to create an inclusive and welcoming environment.
The event featured lowered audio volume, dimmed lighting, and a relaxed cinema policy that allowed children to move freely without fear of judgment—an arrangement aimed at ensuring accessibility and comfort for all attendees. Many children at the event were experiencing a cinema visit for the first time.
“Our goal this year was to create a Children’s Day experience where every child, regardless of their ability, could enjoy the wonder of cinema,” said Kene Okwuosa, Group CEO of Filmhouse Group. “Inclusion is not a side note for us—it is integral to how we design and deliver entertainment experiences.”
The animated feature Lilo & Stitch, chosen for its themes of love, friendship, and family, struck a chord with the young audience. Laughter, clapping, and moments of quiet awe filled the screening hall, as the children immersed themselves in the story.
Funto Ajoku, Supervisor at Shades of Life Care, commended the initiative and emphasised its emotional impact. “Thanks to our ongoing partnership with Filmhouse Group, we were able to give our children a moment of joy and belonging,” she said. “Watching their faces light up during the film reminded us why inclusive spaces matter.”
The initiative builds on Filmhouse Group’s broader commitment to diversity and inclusion within Nigeria’s entertainment landscape. The company has previously piloted other inclusive programs and says it intends to expand its sensory-friendly offerings across more locations and occasions.
“We believe that cinema should be a shared experience for everyone,” said Okwuosa. “By making our spaces accessible, we’re not just screening movies—we’re opening doors.”
Families left the event with branded memorabilia and gratitude, as parents and caregivers shared appreciation for what several called “a rare and meaningful outing.”
The event marks a growing recognition of the importance of inclusive cultural spaces, with Filmhouse Group positioning itself as a leader in accessible cinema programming in Nigeria.
