Hip-hop artist Jude “MI” Abaga is set to make his animated film debut as the lead voice in Gammy & The Living Things, which opens in Nigerian cinemas on September 5.

The feature, described by FilmOne Entertainment as Nigeria’s most ambitious animated film to date, also stars Nollywood veterans Joke Silva, Pete Edochie, and comedian Bovi Ugboma.

Abaga voices the character Gammy, an ambitious agama lizard who leaves his familiar world to pursue dreams in Lagos. The story, told with humour, music and cultural themes, follows his journey of resilience and discovery.

Victoria Ogar, Head of Distribution at FilmOne Entertainment, the film’s official distributor, said the project demonstrates the potential of African animation. “Gammy represents everything we’ve always believed about Nigerian stories; that they are powerful enough to connect with global audiences while remaining locally resonant,” she said. “This is proof that African animation can stand tall on the big screen.”

Kene Okwuosa, Group CEO of Filmhouse Group, noted that the film aligns with the company’s broader vision of expanding Nollywood’s reach. “At Filmhouse Group, our mission has always been to scale Nollywood and give it global visibility. Bringing Gammy & The Living Things to cinemas is another example of how we are pushing boundaries, investing in new genres, and making sure African creativity has the platform it deserves,” he said.

Gammy & The Living Things will be available in cinemas nationwide from September 5, 2025.
