Nollywood filmmaker Bukola Ogunsola has shared insights into her latest project, Something About The Briggs, describing it as her most ambitious work yet.

Scheduled for release in cinemas on January 31st, 2025, the film explores themes of marriage, love, and forgiveness, set against a backdrop of exceptional production quality.

Speaking exclusively to Guardian Life during a private press screening on Tuesday, Ogunsola reflected on the journey of making the film and what sets it apart from her earlier works.

“I have done two films in the past, Father’s Day and Another Father’s Day. This is different. Number one, this is bigger in terms of scale.

“The story is different. We talk about marriage, we talk about love. We went very big on costumes. We made over 150 costumes for this film. We went all out to make a film that we believe speaks of excellence, has a very strong message of marriage, love, and forgiveness.

“What makes it different is the effort I put into this one. They say, go big, or go home. This one, I decided to go big, and I went really, really big,” she said.

Challenges

Ogunsola described Something About The Briggs as a labour of love that took five years to come to life. However, the journey came with its challenges, particularly around securing funding for such an ambitious project.

Something About The Briggs is a five-year dream that came to reality, and the greatest challenge I had to make the film was basically funding because I wanted to really do it big. I didn’t want to compromise; I wanted to go all out. Anyone who sees this film would know that we really went all out for it, and it took quite a while for it to happen.

“I drew my inspiration from life experiences. I talk to people a lot, I see what is going on social media when it concerns marriages,” she explained.

A seasoned filmmaker steps up

In Something About The Briggs, Ogunsola takes on the triple role of writer, producer, and director for the first time. This marks a new milestone for the filmmaker, who has spent nearly a decade honing her craft.

Her filmmaking journey began in 2015 with her first screenplay, The Perfect Plan, for Africa Magic. Since then, Ogunsola has written, directed, and produced multiple projects. Her film Another Father’s Day had a nationwide cinema release in 2019 and is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

For this project, Ogunsola worked with a talented production team, including KC Obiajulu as Director of Photography, Abisola Omolade as Art Director, Uvie Enakarhire as Assistant Director, Joseph Duke as Production Manager, Yolanda Okereke as Costume Designer, and T.A’LA Mode Beauty as Makeup Artist.

“It seemed impossible at first, but today, we’re closer to the finish line. Super grateful to God for His help and to everyone who has supported us on this journey,” she shared during the press screening.

Star-studded cast

Directed by Bukola Ogunsola, ‘Something About The Briggs’ boasts of ensemble cast, featuring Daniel Etim Effiong, Ariyiike Dimples, Norbert Young, Gloria Young, Rita Dominic, Iyabo Ojo, Bukky Wright, Stan Nze, Kenneth Okolie, Kalu Ikeagwu, Linda Ejiofor, Kanaga Jnr, Elma Mbadiwe, Simi Drey, Tubosun Aiyedehin, Zack Orji, and Liz Benson-Ameye.

What to expect

With over 150 custom-made costumes, Something About The Briggs delivers a visual spectacle that matches its heartfelt storytelling. The film promises to explore relatable themes of love, marriage, and forgiveness, raising the bar for Nollywood productions.
