Beauty influencers constantly showcase the “ideal” skin, leaving many of us in a state of envy. If this is you, we totally get you. Desiring a healthier, radiant skin isn’t as wallet-draining as so many brands might lead you to believe. Many times, the clear skin you desire might just be hindered by some errors you unknowingly indulge in. Small mistakes in your skincare routine can stop your products from working their best or even harm your skin.

The good news is, once you identify and rectify these skincare mistakes, you’re very well on your way to getting the clear skin you desire. Here are the most common skincare mistakes to avoid.

1. Skipping the patch test

One of the biggest mistakes is skipping a patch test before trying a new product. Not all skincare products are made for everyone, and your skin might react badly. Always test a small amount on your wrist or jawline and wait 24 hours before using it on your entire face.

2. Applying in the wrong order

Imagine building a house by starting with the roof – a recipe for disaster, right? Well, skincare is quite similar. Applying your products in the wrong order can create confusion and undermine their effectiveness. To maximise the benefits of your skincare routine, understanding the correct order is essential – i.e cleansing, toning, serum, moisturiser and sunscreen.

3. Not waiting between steps

Another mistake is rushing through your routine. Imagine your skincare routine as a form of meditation and mindfulness practice. If you layer products too quickly, they might not absorb properly. Give each product a minute or two to sink into your skin before moving to the next step.

4. Avoiding sunscreen

Skipping sunscreen is one of the most common skincare mistakes. Sunscreen isn’t just for sunny days; even on cloudy days or indoors, harmful UV rays can damage your skin. Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher–it’s your best defence against ageing and skin damage.

5. Over-exfoliating

In the quest for clear, smooth skin, many of us are guilty of over-exfoliating by applying chemical-powered serums and physical scrubs every couple days. The truth is, your skin doesn’t replenish itself fast enough to endure constant buffing. Give your skin time to rejuvenate or else you’ll end up reddened and irritating your skin.
