Did you know there was such a thing as food and drink laws? Apparently, many cultures around the world created laws to be associated with the consumption of certain foods and drinks based on superstitions, coincidences and some very vital facts. Not many of them are still enforced today, but a good number still haven’t been amended. Either way, it’s nice to know just for the sake of knowing.

Of all the weird and wacky food and drink laws we stumbled across, these are the ones that made us laugh the most:-
  1. Bbeing able to crush a beer can between your breasts is a pretty cool talent to have, but you have to be careful where you flaunt it. In Western Australia, crushing a can of beer between your breasts could actually land you in jail or cost you a heavy fine.
  2. Did you know we have a law here in Nigeria that makes it illegal to import beer? This is probably why we have so many locally brewed beers. Of course, you still can’t drink these local beers unless you’re over 21 and not living in a Northern state where they don’t drink at all.
  3. If you ever happen to be fishing in the waters of the United Kingdom and catch a sturgeon, whale, dolphin or porpoise, you have to hand it over to the royal palace. Kind of makes us wonder what she does with them.
  4. If you’re a serious foodie, you might want to reconsider visiting Dubai during Ramadan. In 2011, Dubai’s Foreign Office decreed that tourists visiting during the period must be considerate of local laws and customs. This means no eating or drinking in public places during the day.
  5. For some reason, people actually enjoy sitting in a park and feeding birds. In San Francisco, however, it is illegal to feed birds on the streets or sidewalks. If you’re caught doing this, you could get hit with a heavy fine.
  6. Remember how I said foodies might want to be cautious about visiting Dubai? Denmark is one place I’m putting on my to-visit list. At restaurants in Denmark, you don’t have to pay for your meal if you don’t feel completely “full”. Obviously, they don’t get a lot of Nigerians there.
  7. And, because our list isn’t complete without some sexism, married women in La Paz, Bolivia, are only allowed one glass of wine at a restarant or bar. Why? So that they don’t flirt with other men. Of course, men are allowed to drink as much as they want.
