The Killer Year 2016
The year 2016 would forever go down in history as the year with breaking news and hot topics that kept us on our toes all year round. Indeed, it was a year for the media as well a mouthful for citizens of different countries. It has been argued that the year with all its events did kill people.
Suffice to say 2016 was the year of WTF moments!!
Donald Trump wins the Presidential Election
The world literally went to sleep with Hilary Clinton in the lead and woke up to President elect Donald Trump being announced as the winner of the Presidential elections. This decision made by one of the greatest superpowers in the world was shocking as Donald defiled all expectations. The way the world reacted to this decision was a rolling ball, from the stock market to celebrities breaking down and promising to leave the country. Most traumatizing were the protests because of the results of this election. This certainly tops the list and would still be shocking for the next four years.
President Buhari and The Other Room
On a visit to Germany, and while stood next to Chancellor Angela Merkel, Buhari told reporters: “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen, and my living room and the other room.” This was his reaction to her comment about his policies during her interview with BBC Hausa. Social media had a field day, the support was divided between the feminists and those who claimed that this was a joke which the world did not understand. Either ways, this trended in the news and all over social media.
Wizkid Is the First Nigerian To Top Billboard
Courtesy his feature in Drake’s single – One Dance, Wizkid was the first Nigerian to top the Billboard chart. This was a feat for Nigeria it was a thing of pride to see Nigeria’s very own Star Boy on a track with Drake. Our chest grew bigger as One Dance tops Billboard Hot 100 for the 10th Week in July and was named ‘No. 1 Song of the Summer’ in September.
2016 Rio Olympics
The 2016 Rio Olympics also featured the Paralympics and this event was nothing short of historical. Simone Biles led her US teammates to a gold for team and took home five medals including the women’s individual all-around. Tom Daley, diver for Great Britain took to Twitter to show the situation of the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre pool which turned green on one end thanks to algae that was proved to be harmless. Not to mention the history and record breaking sets by Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt. All in a very terrible economy for Brazil which they pulled off.
Ladies got in formation with Beyoncé when she released her visual album in April. There were speculations of trouble in paradise with husband, Jay-Z which only drove the internet crazy with interest and drove her sales through the roof. Lemonade debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 485,000 copies in its first week which earned Beyoncé her sixth consecutive number-one album in the country.
