First Date Essentials

We know it’s only Wednesday, but the weekend is upon us and most people have been going on first dates even before the weekend anyway. I’ll be honest – living in lagos has been becoming more and more of a struggle of late. But, like all things in Nigeria, we take a horrible situation, scoop some ice cream on it, top it with skittles and some sprinkles, and take our time enjoying every lick of it.

Just as the slightly depressing state of the economy shouldn’t stop you from going out on a date, it also should prevent you from making sure you have your first date essentials

Extra Cash/Vex Money

We cannot emphasise enough how important it is for you to have extra cash (a.k.a vex money). As a guy, you need the extra cash just in case the budget is not what you planned for. If plans change during the date, you need to be able to hold your ground. As a lady, if you already planned to split the bill, have extra cash on you just incase things go sideways.

Uber App

We already know transportation is key.  More important than pulling  up to your venue in style is having an exit option in case your date isn’t planning to give you a lift.  Uber Lagos is a much safer and cheaper option than just flagging down any random taxi. Plus it never hurt anybody to show up in style,or leave in style as well.

Look Stylish

Everyone agrees you have to look dapper on your first date. First impressions matter, and it might be the only one you would get. If you have a mishap before your date, I also advice that you have an extra pair of clothing. Did I mention how comfortable you have to be in your outfit? Trust me – nobody wants to look like an uncomfortable child, squirming on that first date.

Still on looking stylish, make sure you have a mini bottle of cologne or perfume handy as well as gum. Need I say more?

Makeup

Ladies in the house, do not forget your lipstick at home. You’ll have to freshen up your makeup once or twice during the date, so you look the same leaving as you did coming in.

Communication

This is essential. If you don’t have so much in common with your date, research some of the things you do know about them and capitalize on that. Nobody wants to go on that awkward dinner date or movie and not really have anything to talk about.

Security

Just as a safety precaution, be sure you can protect yourself. This counts especially if you’re going to an area you’re not very familiar with. Also, you never really know who you’re going on a date with. Sure, you’ve spoken for a while and believe you know this person to an extent. Unfortunately, some people may just allow the devil to try to use them. Always be sure to let someone know where you are going and who you are going with. This person should check in on you frequently. Also, having pepper spray and or a taser handy wouldn’t hurt.
