Many people wake up, look in the mirror, and focus on what they don’t like. Society has created unrealistic beauty standards, making people feel they are never good enough. But what if, instead of criticising, we began to treat our bodies with the same love and care we offer our best friends?
Change the way you talk to yourself
Experts say the first step to body confidence is replacing negative self-talk with kindness. Many of us constantly think, “I hate my body” or “I wish I looked different.” If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, don’t say it to yourself.
A wellness coach advises, “Instead of saying, ‘My arms are too big,’ say, ‘My arms are strong and help me every day.’” Small shifts in mindset make a big difference.
Appreciate what your body does
Your body allows you to walk, dance, laugh, and heal. Instead of solely focusing only on appearance, celebrate what it can do.
“Your heart beats without you telling it to. Your legs take you places. Learn to be grateful,” a social worker at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Yaba, Lagos, Ajetunmobi Abolaji tells Guardian Life.

Eat well and move for joy
Food is not the enemy. Experts encourage eating a balanced diet and listening to your body’s needs. Exercise should also feel like joy, not punishment. Whether you choose to walk, dance or play with your pets or children, moving your body keeps you active and uplifted.
Avoid comparison and embrace your uniqueness
Social media often perpetuates unrealistic standards. Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on your own growth. Your body is your home—cherish it, care for it, and your confidence will blossom.
Prioritise rest and relaxation
Your body works hard every day, so it deserves ample rest. Ensure you get enough sleep, take regular breaks, and find time to relax. Stress and exhaustion can negatively impact how you feel about yourself, so make self-care a priority.
