Ilemona Akpa’s holiday memories are a blend of laughter, family and unexpected acts of kindness.
“Growing up in a big family was always fun, especially during the holidays,” she recollected. Ilemona recounted a story of attempting to make a two-step cake, a humourous tale that continues to bring joy to her family gatherings.
As we settled into a conversation, Ilemona shared a cherished tale of a cake-making escapade that echoed through the years.
“We took out a day to make a two-step cake, and we were so proud of it. Unfortunately, our masterpiece met a tragic end within 24 hours – destroyed in an accident! The story still makes us laugh every time we recall it,” she reminisced.
These gatherings, filled with stories from childhood to present escapades, create a unique blend of laughter and connection. This reflects the power of shared experiences that bring families closer, turning ordinary moments into lifelong treasures.
The Magical Reunion
Ilemona’s most memorable reunion unfolded during her childhood when her mother’s absence threatened to cast a shadow over the celebrations. “My mum left for the village and said she wouldn’t make it back for Christmas. On Christmas eve, at about 8.00pm, a light knock on the door and the ring of my mother’s voice set the tone for a vibrant holiday.”
The unexpected reunion with her mother added an extra layer of sweetness to the festivities. Her eyes lit up as she continued, “I love to say, the holidays are where my mother is. She makes the holidays feel more beautiful, like warm feet in thick stockings.”
Acts Of Kindness: Bridging Divides, Filling Stomachs In Zaria
Transitioning to tales of community generosity, Ilemona painted a vivid picture of the holiday spirit in Zaria, Kaduna. “In Zaria, it’s normal to share food not just with neighbours but with everyone. Almajiris, who go around begging during festive periods, receive the same hospitality as any other guest.”
She recalled the impact of these acts: “While it might look like just a plate of food, the act itself bridges divides within our community, divided by religion and ethnic affiliations. Loving and showing kindness to another is the key to becoming better as a people.”
Hospitality, a cornerstone of Ilemona’s community, takes centre stage during the holidays. “I remember when my mother was making cupcakes for Christmas. A group of environmental staff came to clear up the bushes around the area. My mother lined us up with trays of cakes and cold Kunu to serve them. The brief time of refreshment was fascinating to see, and I dare say our bushes were cleared with mastery after that.”
Unexpected Generosity: A Black Mamba, Neighbours With Sticks, Cutlasses
Amid laughter, Ilemona conveyed a thrilling tale of unexpected kindness. “Our chicken started making more noise than usual, and we discovered a black mamba swallowing the eggs. In seconds, neighbours armed with sticks and cutlasses rushed in. The snake was defeated, and some chickens were saved.”
Walking down memory lane she shared, “Moving to a more urban part of the country has made me realise that such acts are precious. My small town and parents made it clear that acts of kindness can go a long way for a better people.”
Chiamaka Adibe’s Unforgettable 2019 Family Reunion
“It was the first time we were all gathered in one place at the same time with our adopted sister/aunty and her children as well and celebrate together as a family,” Chiamaka Adibe recalled, as she shared a poignant story of a family reunion and 70th birthday celebration for her father in Awka, Anambra State, back in 2019.
The Adibe family had faced challenges in the past, with a missed reunion owing to unforeseen circumstances. Determined to make amends, the family started planning two months in advance, ensuring that every member could participate.
The reunion unfolded December 24, creating unforgettable memories. The family stayed in a luxurious hotel, enjoying an adult night out while the kids had their own festivities. As the clock struck midnight on Christmas day, the atmosphere was filled with love and anticipation.
The main event on December 25 included a photo session, a Thanksgiving Mass in honour of their father, and a sumptuous lunch where heartfelt gifts were presented. The day ended with a visit to a fun fair centre for the kids and a touching stopover at a motherless baby’s home.
Chiamaka said, “my dad and mum were completely taken by surprise and were indeed grateful for all we were able to put together. And of course! Not forgetting all the asoebi and matching T-shirt colours for each family unit. The colours were really popping!” But the celebration didn’t end there. The Adibe family also visited a motherless baby’s home, providing gifts and financial support.”
Chiamaka noted that her father, unaware of the meticulous planning, gave money to the children as a token of appreciation. The family’s generosity extended beyond their immediate circle.
She proudly shared: “Grandpa promised to carry out a developmental project for the home, which was done the following year.”
This sense of community spirit extended to their Lagos branch town union, where a scholarship scheme was established.
Chiamaka explained, “The scholarship programme mentioned above is not just for those of our members in the Lagos branch, but to those who reside in the village as well. And the selection process is as transparent as possible.”

“My neighbour once shared with me how her aunt sent her N2 million just like that to support her in her family business after her husband had a major surgery procedure which cost him a huge sum.”

Chinenye Ukaegbu: A Christmas to Remember
“It was last year’s Christmas for me,” Chinenye Ukaegbu begins with a sparkle in her eyes. “We had a family reunion from my maternal side—food, gifts, dancing, and laughter—it was really nice.”

Away from the extended family setup, Chineye also reminisces on the time an instance of extraordinary acts of kindness took place. “When I was younger and my dad was still alive, my family and I went to a home for the mentally challenged people to celebrate with them. We danced with them and exchanged gifts. I also saw that these people were gifted.” She explained “I feel it made them feel loved. I mean, I will feel loved if people I don’t know come to give gifts and dance with me. The joy of family reunion and acts of kindness during the Christmas holiday season is one priceless memory to be cherished.
