In the ever-evolving world of Nigerian music, Augustine Nwankwo, better known as Relish, is emerging as a fresh voice with a unique sound. Born in Bauchi on August 1st and hailing from Anambra State, Relish’s journey into music reflects the diversity of his experiences across Nigeria. In a recent interview, the artist opened up about his origins, creative process, and aspirations.

Relish shared that his musical journey began in the church choir, where his love for music took root at a young age. Singing in church taught him the power of connection through sound. “It was more than just singing; it was about expressing myself in a way that words alone couldn’t,” he said.

His upbringing in different parts of Nigeria—first in the North, then the middle belt, and eventually the East—played a significant role in shaping his artistry. According to Relish, these regions contributed to his ability to blend Afro Fusion with Afro highlife, creating a style that feels both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition. “I carry a bit of each place with me when I create,” he explained.

When discussing his 2022 EP, Love and Addiction, Relish described it as a deeply personal project. The EP, he noted, explores the highs and lows of love, drawing listeners into its raw, emotional narratives. “Love can be sweet, but it can also feel overwhelming, like an addiction,” he said, adding that he wanted the project to feel relatable and honest.

Singles like Philomena, Fallacy, and Enter Body showcase his knack for storytelling and his emotional depth as a songwriter. Relish revealed that his approach to songwriting often stems from personal experiences and observations. “I try to keep my lyrics honest because I want listeners to feel like they’re part of the story,” he said, describing how melodies and beats often guide his creative process.

Relish credited Lagos, the hub of Nigeria’s music industry, as a transformative influence on his career. The city’s fast pace and competitive environment have pushed him to grow as an artist. “Lagos is full of energy and opportunities,” he said. “It’s a tough place, but it brings out the best in you.”

When asked about what he hopes his music conveys to fans, Relish responded with heartfelt sincerity. “Music is my love language, and I use it to connect with people on a deeper level. Whether it’s joy, pain, or hope, I want my music to be a soundtrack for their lives.”

For aspiring artists, his advice was clear: authenticity is key. “Stay true to yourself and your craft. It’s easy to get caught up in trends, but being genuine is what sets you apart,” he advised. Relish’s rise in the music industry is a testament to his talent, passion, and determination. With his unique blend of Afro highlife and Afrofusion, and a clear vision for his future, Relish is poised to make a lasting impact on the Nigerian music scene and beyond.
