5iveMusic holds Bethel Rocks on April 22

5iveMusic, one of the foremost distribution companies in the country, would on April 22, hold a gospel festival. With Bethel Rocks as theme, the distribution company created the festival, which holds at Jhalobia Recreational Parks and Garden, Ajao Estate, Lagos, to address the dichotomy between gospel and secular music.

According to the General Manager, 5iveMusic, Ms. Aibee Abidoye, “people see gospel music as a ministry and not part of an industry. In other parts of the world, gospel music is a genre of music. Music is music –– it is created, packaged and released to its target audience.

“The same way people buy, promote and engage other genres of music, should apply to gospel music. What is happening is that most people consider it, as a ministration and pay little to nothing for artiste performances. This does not encourage growth and sustainability for the artistes or the music. We want to change the narrative.

“There are a few examples of churches that understand this principle. Christ Embassy has a record label that supports its artistes, not only with distributions and sales, but also with paid platforms where they can perform. House on the Rock has also shown that there is an audience for gospel music with its yearly concert, ‘The Xperience’,” she said.

Ms. Abidoye appreciates the position of Churches that are making efforts to change the situation, but believes more can still be done.“Another perception I want to change is that gospel music is for the Church, which defeats the purpose of this genre of music. The gospel is to reach the ends of the earth; as distributors, we want to play our part in doing this. The music should not remain within the four walls of the Church. We have partnered with Cloud 9, who has created a dedicated playlist for gospel content on our platform to be accessed for streaming and download,” she disclosed.

Bethel Rocks hopes to cater to over 2000 people in a relaxed environment. People can expect to enjoy the company of others, as they eat, shop, dance and enjoy great uplifting music. Gospel artistes billed to perform include: Tope Alabi, Sammie Okposo, Tim Godfrey, Eben, Nosa, Onos, Steve Crown, PITA and many others. The festival begins from 1pm until late.
