Rising Afrofusion star Victor Effiong Edet, popularly known as Akiniz, is set to release a deeply personal new single titled Oh My God (OMG), scheduled to drop on 30 May.
The song, inspired by moments of hardship and spiritual reflection, captures the emotional toll of navigating life in present-day Nigeria.
With his signature blend of Afrobeat and storytelling, Akiniz describes the single as more than music—it is, in his words, “a prayer”. Reflecting on his personal challenges and the state of the nation, the Bayelsa-born artist says the song emerged from a place of vulnerability and faith.
“Going through that phase of my life, all I could do was pray,” he said. “When I looked around at everything—especially in a country like ours—it felt like only God could come through.”
Set against the backdrop of economic uncertainty and widespread frustration among Nigerian youth, Oh My God delivers a powerful message of resilience. The lyrics speak to the everyday struggles of ordinary people, while urging listeners to hold on to both faith and self-belief.
Akiniz began his musical journey at the age of 13, singing in church choirs before recording his first track Madonna in Bayelsa. Since then, he has gradually carved a niche for himself in the competitive Nigerian music scene, pushing forward despite limited industry support.
“It’s hard doing this alone,” he admitted. “But we’ve come too far to quit now.”
With Oh My God, Akiniz hopes to connect with those who feel overlooked or overwhelmed, using music as a vessel for both catharsis and courage. The single is expected to resonate with fans who crave authenticity and soul in today’s Afrobeats landscape.
