Celebrate World Music Day 2017 in Nigeria
Initiated by France in 1982 as Fete de la Musique, World Music Day is a day for free and public music events in the 120 celebrating countries. It’s usually a mix of amateur singers, local bands, professional and even international artists celebrating the gift of music wherever they find themselves that June 21. It’s an all-day musical celebration.
In some of the 700 cities that recognise WMD, there are usually a series of uncoordinated events holding in streets, parks, restaurants, halls where music lovers, singers, instrumentalists can pop in and make merry. In Washington DC, for instance, volunteers run the show in a special Make Music Day event. This year in DC, it’s happening in more than 17 venues with more than 69 artists and groups showcasing.
Today in Nigeria, there will be 12 events holding simultaneously across Lagos city. The state joined the league of celebrating cities last year in a series it called Make Music Lagos. The 2016 debut was in three venues, boasting 35 performances and over 3000 guests.
This year, more than 200 performances are expected and many more thousand guests. A number of Nigerian music stars including Bez, Omawumi and King Sunny Ade will also visit some venues. The cream of the Make Music Lagos events will hold at the Balmoral in Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island and it is organised by Showgear limited and partners.
