Nigerian Afrofusion artist Lynox has confirmed his departure from the duo Playaz, marking the beginning of a new solo chapter in his career. The announcement coincides with the release of his latest single, Stay With Me, and a newly signed distribution agreement with Empire Distribution.
Playaz, formed in 2018 by Lynox and Gabana Playaz, rose to prominence in 2019 with the release of Mad Oh. The track gained traction both locally and internationally, becoming a viral catchphrase at the time. Its profile expanded further when American rapper Cardi B referenced a line from the song on social media, amplifying its reach beyond Nigerian borders. The duo later released an official remix featuring Zlatan.
Subsequent releases such as Show Dem and the EP PlaySound, which featured tracks including I Wonder and Color, reinforced the pair’s reputation for blending Afrobeats with contemporary pop influences. In interviews, they frequently described drawing inspiration from their environment and everyday experiences.
Lynox’s departure signals a shift rather than a reinvention. Before the formation of Playaz, he had established himself as a solo act, earning nominations and accolades, including recognition at the 2020 City People Entertainment Music Awards.
His new single, Stay With Me, now available across major streaming platforms, introduces what appears to be a reflective yet forward-looking tone. While details of the forthcoming EP, including its title and release date, have yet to be disclosed, the partnership with Empire Distribution suggests a broader international rollout strategy.
In a message shared via social media, Lynox expressed gratitude to his former partner and described the transition as the beginning of a new phase. The tone of his statement emphasised appreciation rather than rupture, framing the change as professional evolution.
Industry observers note that distribution partnerships increasingly shape how African artists scale globally. Empire Distribution has worked with a range of international acts, providing marketing, digital placement and cross-border exposure.
For Lynox, the move positions him within a larger distribution network at a time when Afrofusion and Afrobeats continue to command global attention. Whether Stay With Me signals a sonic departure or continuity remains to be seen, but it clearly marks a reset.
The coming months will likely reveal how this new chapter unfolds, both in sound and in scope, as Lynox steps forward independently once again.
