Nigerian artist TC Max, whose real name is Chikelu Onyebeadi, is breaking away from the expectations of the modern day with his new single, “Hold Me Down.”
This song is a departure from the common R&B themes of breakups, situationships, or the longing to be with someone late at night. Instead, the artist is singing about the often overlooked but perhaps even more meaningful topic of the people around you who simply show up.
It is a bold choice to tackle such a topic, and he succeeds. The production is handled by Zeezbeatz, whose real name is Zainab Jinadu. There is no extraneous layering or any moment where the beat tries to fight its way to the top of the production. The result is soulful and warm without being intrusive, a hard feat to accomplish when the musical scene is so prone to excess. Zeezbeatz knows exactly how to produce the song without attempting to do anything more than is necessary to do so well.
TC Max is also having a great presence on the song. His delivery is genuine without feeling like he is putting on a show, which is fitting with the genuine nature of the topic. The problem with the song is the writing. Some of the lines feel like they try to be deep without quite getting there, or they miss the opportunity to be as precise with the image as they might have been to make the impact greater.
Regardless, “Hold Me Down” is the kind of song that shows the world why good music does not have to be complicated. TC Max and Zeezbeatz are working hard to create something worth paying attention to.
