Netflix Unveils Exciting Lineup Of Nollywood Films For 2023
Netflix has announced a slate of Nollywood films and series that will be premiering on its streaming platform in the fourth quarter of 2023. The lineup includes films from some of the most talented filmmakers in Nigeria, such as Editi Effiong, Mo Abudu, Charles Okpaleke, Kunle Afolayan, and Kemi Adetiba.
The films in the slate cover a wide range of genres, from drama to comedy to thriller. Some of the highlights include:
The Black Book
Get ready for the eagerly anticipated mystery and crime thriller, “The Black Book,” brought to you by Effiong and Anakle Films. Unfolding against a backdrop of past grievances, the story follows a man’s relentless pursuit of justice after corrupt policemen take the life of his only son.
Directed and produced by Effiong, the film boasts a star-studded ensemble including Richard Mofe-Damijo and Ade Laoye in leading roles, joined by a talented cast featuring Sam Dede, Alex Usifo Omiagbo, Olumide Oworu, Shaffy Bello, Ireti Doyle, Taiwo Ajayi Lycett, Ikechukwu Onunaku, Patrick Doyle, Bimbo Manuel, Femi Branch, Denola Grey, Kelechi Udegbe, and Nobert Young. With this powerhouse combination, “The Black Book” is set to deliver an unforgettable cinematic experience.
Òlòtūré (the series)
“Òlòtūré,” the acclaimed film by Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Studios highlighting human trafficking, is set to make a powerful comeback on Netflix, this time as a gripping series. Òlòtūré, the undercover journalist, resumes her harrowing mission, crossing borders and venturing into dangerous erritories, from the Benin border through Niger and Libya to the Mediterranean, in a desperate attempt to escape the horrors she has uncovered.
Director Kenneth Gyang leads the charge once again, and the beloved cast including Sharon Ooja, Omoni Oboli, Beverley Osu, Ikechukwu Onunaku, Stan Nze, Amarachukwu Ono, Bukola Oladipupo, Daniel Etim Effiong, and Patrick Doyle resume their roles, promising an enchanting continuation of the story.
Ijogbon
“Ijogbon” is a coming-of-age drama-adventure film that follows the journey of four teenagers from a rural village in South-West Nigeria. After stumbling upon a pouch of diamonds, they decide to hide their discovery, setting off a chain of grave consequences.
Crafted by Kunle Afolayan and brought to life by Golden Effects Pictures, the movie stars Ruby Akubueze, Kayode Ojuolape, Oluwaseyi Ebiesuwa, Fawaz Aina of Ikorodu Boiz fame, Yemi Solade, Gabriel Afolayan, and Bimbo Manuel.
Aníkúlapó (the series)
“Anikulapo,” another gem from Kunle Afolayan and Golden Effects, continues the legacy of the beloved Yoruba epic, Aníkúlápó. This cherished franchise now takes a new form as a four-part series, directed and produced by Afolayan himself.
The series boasts a stellar cast including familiar faces like Sola Sowobale, Kunle Remi, and Bimbo Ademoye, along with talents such as Owobo Ogunde, Gabriel Afolayan, Lateef Adedimeji, Eyiyemi Afolayan, Uzee Usman, Oyinda Sanni, and Taiwo Hassan.
