Oluwatoyin Oshinowo PhD is the Co-founder and Vice President of Product at Fieldinsight, a company that helps large organisations use data to manage and monitor their distribution assets.
As one of the women featured in Techcabal’s Tech Women Lagos, a portrait series and exhibition of fifty inspiring women in technology, Oluwatoyin shared some of her story and motivations:
The experience that led her to technology and product design:
Oluwatoyin was influenced to enter a career in technology by being “personal assistant” to her father around the house. She describes him as a handyman and gadget geek whose passion impacted her choice of career.
“For my undergraduate fourth-year project, I became obsessed with modelling problems to find solutions and this was my first proper stint (though I didn’t know it at the time) in product design and I was hooked.” The fourth-year project also became her Ph.D. thesis.
Today, she is still modelling problems to find solutions within business and technology through product design.
Turning “weakness” into strength:
Oluwatoyin lives with Sickle Cell Beta Thalassemia. Although some might consider this a weakness, she has turned it into a strength that shapes her work ethic.
“If I am taken out for a couple of days due to a sickle cell crisis, I need for my business to still run while I recuperate without me being the bottleneck. This has made me conscientious about my focus on defining and obtaining goals, documentation, collaboration and accountability.”
For young women considering a career in technology, Oluwatoyin advises “know your worth” and “never be afraid to ask questions”.
