Behold it is that time of the year where festivities  and celebrations are all around us. If you are planning to use the holiday period to spend some time with your family or whether you want to make the season extra special, here are a few festive getaway ideas to get you started.

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 

Also known as the Christmas City, Bethlehem is the seventh most populous city in Pennsylvania and is close to New York City, which offers a cozy alternative. The city is known for its long historical relationship with the celebration of Christmas and is one of the best places in Pennsylvania to experience the holidays. 

Bethlehem is proud of its Live Advent Calendar, which can be enjoyed from December 1 to 23. It is family friendly and free. While in Bethlehem, take a trip to the Christmas City Village, a Germany- inspired market that is held in two locations during the holiday season and the Moravian Bookshop; the oldest continually-operating bookstore in the world. Although it is more than just a bookstore, while inside, a visitor can sample delicious beer, enjoy chocolates and browse through a great collection of holiday merchandise and Bethlehem souvenirs.

New York, USA 

New York City, the most populous city in the United States, is also the most popular destination among tourists and it just gets more beautiful and magical at Christmas time. 

The amount of things to do in New York is endless, but some of the things you must do include, stopping by Rockefeller Centre to take a glimpse of the glittering Christmas tree. The center is also home to the city’s famous skating rinks and there are numerous attractions for you and your family. Another must do is the holiday light tour. On the tour, you will get to see the most popular New York attractions like Central Park, Times Square and 5th Avenue. You must also stop by Radio City Hall, the world’s largest indoor theatre. During the holiday season, the hall becomes the host of a dazzling show featuring the world-famous Rockettes dancers. 

Cologne, Germany

Cologne is the largest of Germany’s Western state. The city comes to life in December and it has a reputation of having some of the best and oldest Christmas markets in the country. 

Some of the popular markets to visit include, The Cathedral Christmas Market, the biggest and most popular market and it has marvelous attractions, Heinzels Winter Fairytale; this market is full of gnomes, who are a huge part of the local folklore and The Village of St. Nicholas; a small market full of yummy treats, reindeer, decorations and oh, Santa tends to make an appearance. 

Nairobi, Kenya 

Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya. The name is derived from a phrase, which translates to ‘place of cool waters’, a reference to the Nairobi water that flows through the city. Nairobi is a very fun place to be during Christmas as there are a lot of activities and festivities around for everyone. 

While you are here, you must visit the Nairobi Mamba Village, which is located in Karen. This leisure park offers safari options for visitors to see rhinos, Nile crocodiles, tortoises, ostriches, lions and other animals. There are also options for horse and camel riding, art gallery, botanical gardens and bird watching trails while on a picnic with your family. You can also take a hike at the scenic Karura Forest Reserve that is popular among outdoor enthusiasts. As for Christmas presents, you can go to open air markets where you can choose anything you want; from jewelry to African paintings and fabrics made in Kenya. 

San Fernando, Philippines

Officially known as the City of San Fernando and capital of the province of Pampanga, Philippines, it has often been regarded as the Christmas Capital of the Philippines. 

The city is popular for its Giant Lantern Festival also known as Ligligan Parul, which starts on December 17 and ends January 1; this lantern making tradition dates back to the late 18th century, where villages had to compete for the title of the best lantern makers in San Fernando. Apart from this festive attraction, do not forget to stop and eat at the best restaurants in Pampanga.
