Renowned broadcaster Johnnie Walker, celebrated for his iconic voice on BBC Radio 2, has passed away at the age of 79.

The news comes two months after the veteran radio presenter retired, marking the end of an illustrious 58-year career due to health challenges.

Walker’s death was announced on Tuesday by DJ Bob Harris, who succeeded him on the popular Sounds of the 70s programme. Harris shared the news live on BBC Radio 2, leaving many listeners shocked and saddened.

Walker had been battling pulmonary fibrosis, a serious condition characterised by lung scarring that makes breathing increasingly difficult. In October, he stepped back from hosting his long-running shows, Sounds of the 70s and The Rock Show, which were fan favourites on BBC Radio 2.

Helen Thomas, the head of BBC Radio 2, expressed deep sorrow over Walker’s passing, calling him “a much-loved broadcasting legend.” She said, “He made Sounds of the 70s and The Rock Show appointments to listen to, sharing his personal memories and tales each week. He loved radio and inspired a generation of presenters, passionately promoting the artists and music he cared about so deeply.”

Born in 1944, Johnnie Walker, whose real name was Peter Dingley, became a household name in the UK through his engaging and relatable style on the airwaves.

He joined the BBC in the late 1960s, quickly gaining fame for his personality and deep connection with music. Over the decades, Walker not only entertained millions but also influenced younger radio presenters who admired his passion and storytelling.
