Shakira To Perform At Super Bowl Half-Time Despite NFL Backlash
Shakira alongside Jennifer Lopez will be performing at the Superbowl halftime in 2020.
This was made known earlier this year. It was confirmed that Shakira and Jennifer Lopez would be co-headlining the Halftime Show in February 2020, when the Super Bowl hits Miami.
In a report by Huffpost, the news came after it was revealed that many artistes – including Cardi B and Rihanna – had refused the offer to perform at the Super Bowl, as a protest against the NFL’s treatment of American football player Colin Kaepernick, who had become known for “taking a knee” during the national anthem as a protest against police brutality.
In an interview with The Guardian Uk, when asked what influenced her decision to perform at the Superbowl, she explained:
“Well, you know, I think it’s the right thing to do for the Latino community because we’ve also been through so much in Trump’s America, with walls being built and it’s an opportunity to celebrate our culture, you know?”
Cardi B who was supposed to perform alongside Maroon 5 turned down the offer, she said her soul wouldn’t feel right. Also, Rihanna in an interview with Vogue Magazine said she wouldn’t dare do that, in her words:
“For what? Who gains from that? Not my people,” she said. “I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler. There’s things within that organisation that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way.”
Jay-Z has also turned down their offer because of the same reason as Beyonce.
