St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated every year on March 17 to honor St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. The date marks the anniversary of his death in the fifth century, and the tradition has been observed for over 1,000 years.

While the holiday is now a global celebration of Irish culture, it began as a religious feast. In the ninth and 10th centuries, families in Ireland would attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon.

During this time, the strict rules of Lent were paused, allowing people to dance, drink, and eat traditional meals like bacon and cabbage.

Many modern traditions actually started in America during the 17th century. Famous activities like large street parades and eating corned beef were created by Irish settlers in the United States rather than in Ireland itself. Today, millions of people worldwide continue these traditions by wearing green and hosting festivals to celebrate Irish heritage.

Born in Roman Britain, Patrick was kidnapped as a teenager, enslaved in Ireland, escaped, and later returned as a Christian missionary in the 5th century. He is often credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland, using the three-leaf shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. Another famous, though likely mythical, story suggests he banished all snakes from Ireland.

Patrick is said to have died on March 17, 461 A.D.. Interestingly, he was never formally canonized by the Catholic Church because the official process was only established long after his death.
