In a recent announcement, Spotify, the popular online streaming platform, has recognized Nigerian rapper and singer Olamide Adedeji, widely known as “Olamide,” as the ‘most influential street pop artiste of his generation.’

According to Benewaah Boateng, Spotify’s Editor for West Africa, Olamide has played a crucial role in propelling Street Pop into mainstream recognition as a distinct music genre.

Boateng highlighted Olamide’s consistent influence since his debut hit single, “Eni Duro,” noting his impact in popularizing dance styles like “Shakiti Bobo” and introducing street lingos such as “Baddo Sneh” and “Pepper Dem.”

Through his record label YBNL, Olamide has also contributed significantly to discovering and nurturing talents within the street pop scene.

Street Pop, a fusion of Afrobeats, Highlife, Hip-hop, Fuji, Apala, indigenous sounds, and contemporary elements, has gained recognition for its engaging rhythm and lyrics reflecting the everyday lives of Nigerians navigating street challenges.

Olamide’s ninth position in the list of top 10 artists in Nigeria further solidifies his standing in the music industry.

Other Artists making the rounds also include Seyi Vibez and Zinoleesky making substantial contributions to the genre.

Boateng expressed anticipation for the genre’s growth, suggesting that street pop could emerge as the next global phenomenon similar to Afrobeats.
