Just before this year’s edition of the Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) and Liverpool Fashion Week (LFW) which recently concluded, there was a heavy buildup of expectation and anticipation as the organisers had promised a lineup of never-been-seen before designs and looks.

While both events might have ended, we are still buzzing from the excitement of new looks, designs and some amazing brands that strutted the runway and positively shocked onlookers with their offerings.
One of the brands that commanded attention was Afris Wish’s Moremi Collection by Toyosi Osobu, who is the founder and creative director of the Afrocentric brand.
Walking the runway at the AFWL can be slightly intimidating as the week brings together some of the best and brightest in the industry as well as the toughest critics, but the collection stood out positively in more ways than one for us.

The brand says the Moremi Collection is a celebration of strength, resilience and cultural heritage. Inspired by the story of Funmilayo Osobu, a woman who faced adversity with grace and unwavering support, the collection embodies the spirit of courage and the power of transformation. Transcending the realms of fashion; it honours the legacy of African traditions while reimagining them for the modern, sophisticated woman.

A Critical Look At The Collection’s Pieces
Featuring traditional African textiles like Aso Oke and Adire, common to the Yoruba people of Nigeria and known for their rich cultural significance and craftsmanship, the outfits are the pinnacle of African artistry and elegance.
A blast of stunning hues of gold, burgundy, ivory and green, amongst other colours, evoked a sense of regality, depth and a deep connection to nature, each representing different facets of strength and resilience.

Beyond the attractive colours, the collection included a variety of elegant silhouettes that flatter the female body, designed for both special occasions and refined everyday wear. Some of the pieces easily transform from day/work looks to night looks. With hints of casual and sophisticated stylishness, a good number of looks in the collection could easily pass as modern renaissance African haute-couture; and not just for Africans but for any lover of fashion and style.
Beautiful tailoring, an eye for detail and tasteful finishing all came together to appeal to the modern woman who wants a fusion of traditional and contemporary fashion.
However, it must be noted that there is room for improvement for its next runway appearance. The colour palette of this collection, though very appealing, needs extending to accommodate women of all skin colours and shades. While the current colours are regal and stunning, Afris Wish should consider adding more vibrant hues to appeal to a broader audience.

It would also have been great to see more casual, every day wear options to complement formal pieces. Also, a fuller collection would have been great to see, not just to judge the brand’s versatility but would have also given room for a variety of looks for different occasions.
Do we want to see more of what this brand has to offer in the near future? Absolutely yes. The designs are beautiful, contemporary, appeal to a wide age-range of women, stylish and affordable overall.
In conclusion, Afris Wish had said it was there to show up and stand out in a big way and safe to say, it did deliver on its promise.
