Tems to become first female African headliner at 2025 Afro Nation
Nigerian superstar Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, has made history as the first African female to headline the Afro Nation festival in Portugal.
The anticipated three-day event is set to take place from July 9 to July 11, 2025, and will also feature fellow Nigerian singer Burna Boy as one of the top performers.
The announcement, posted by Afro Nation on Instagram, on Tuesday, September 24, revealed Tems’ role in the 2025 edition.
“Cr!zy tings are happening… in the best way possible! Tems is coming to Afro Nation Portugal 2025! ✨ Our first female african headliner, and it’s only right that we chose this queen to bless us with her amazing voice in Portimao!

“She’s let us know she’s Not An Angel, but her heavenly voice is sure to take the vibes on the beach Higher, to new levels for our 5th year anniversary! We’re making history, and we’re just getting started!🙌🏾,” the post read.
Afro Nation, which kicked off in 2019, was created by Live Nation, SLE – Sociedade Lusa De Espectaculos, and Event Horizon, with the goal of showcasing Africa’s finest talents across various genres like Afrobeats, Hip hop, RnB, Dancehall, Gqom, Amapiano, and more.
In addition to its global impact, the festival earned a nomination for Best Overseas Festival at the 2019 UK Festival Awards and was recognised by Billboard Magazine in 2020 as one of the Gatekeepers of the Nigerian Music Industry. Tems’ upcoming performance is another step in cementing her place in the global music scene.

This year, Tems released her first studio album, Born in the Wild, which charted in the top thirty in countries like the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the UK, where it peaked at number 24.
She also embarked on her global Born in the Wild Tour, bringing her soulful sounds to fans worldwide.
Over her career, Tems has racked up list of accolades, including a Grammy, a Billboard Women in Music Award, four NAACP Image Awards, four BET Awards, and three Soul Train Music Awards, underlining her growing influence in the music industry.
