The 21st-century woman is strong, fierce, has a mind of her own and, above all, independent.

She knows her worth and wouldn’t settle for anything less than what she deserves. Being an independent woman is being able to find happiness on your own, have self-confidence without relying on people or society for validation. It also means expressing yourself as well as having a healthy relationship with others.

If you are looking to become a Miss Independent, here are things to consider:

PUT YOURSELF FIRST: When it has to do with independence, be comfortable in your own space and enjoy time alone. When you find out that you need something, give yourself that attention, pamper yourself. Afterall, everyone needs TLC (Tender Loving Care). Intimacy? Spend time alone and even explore nature. When you can meet your own emotional needs, your relationships will be healthier. Stay true to yourself, and enjoy every moment of it.

UNDERSTAND AND PLAN YOUR FINANCES: Having your own money gives you confidence; being able to afford housing, a car or any need gives you a sense of pride. Be passionate about carrying out your work while learning about investments and saving opportunities. Read books, ask questions about investments so that you will not make the wrong decisions and end up wasting your resources.

REFLECT AND BELIEVE IN YOURSELF: Reflecting makes you understand your wants, needs, know your strengths and weaknesses. Be honest about your shortcomings and work on them. Also, believe in yourself and your achievements because when you lack confidence, people will walk over you. Believing in yourself boosts your confidence.

CONFESS POSITIVITY: Daily positive confessions boost your confidence every day. Before you set about your day-to-day activity, look at yourself in the mirror and say positive words. Remind yourself of how beautiful, smart, and great you are. When you are having a bad day or if things are not going according to plan, remind yourself of how much of a badass that you are.

BE FIRM AND STAND BY YOUR WORDS: Let your YES be YES and your NO be NO. Being your own advocate and be able to stand for what you believe in. Do not be a people pleaser. Not everyone will like you and that is okay. Stay true to your words and let everyone know your stand on matters that concern you.

DRESS THE WAY YOU WANT: When deciding what to wear, take into account your body type and personal taste.

DETERMINE YOUR LIFE’S GOALS: Determine and research on what you intend to achieve. Self-motivation and visualising your aim will make you enthusiastic about the future. Understanding your life’s goal strengthens your resolve.

  • Make plans
  • Implement strategies
  • Make deadlines for goal actualisations

FACE CHALLENGES HEAD-ON: Challenges will always be there and, no matter how far you run, they will always be there. When you have your mind on a goal, set up a plan and work according to it. NEVER GIVE UP!!!

Facing challenges enables you to defeat and learn from them. No matter how much you look at it, people are looking up to you.

LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES: Do not be afraid to make a mistake. Instead, learn from it. Also, forgive yourself and do not dwell on your past. I’d leave you with a quote by Isrealmore Ayivor- “When you fall, you rise up. When you fall again, rise up again. This is just a developmental process that makes a healthy baby become a successful man.”

TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH: Eat healthily, exercise daily if you can. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Ensure you discuss with your doctor the kind of exercises that are good for you because everyone is different, also have monthly check-ups. Ensure you get up to 7 or 8 hours of sleep daily to feel refreshed and be productive.

Being an independent woman will change your life and give it a 360 turnaround.

Depending on yourself to achieve your goals will build your character, make you believe in yourself and give you the happiness you truly deserve.
