Recently, there has been a weather forecast that Nigeria will experience flood and overflow of banks, gutters and canals. Also, there has been persistent downpour. Floods can be devastating. It can ruin assets and property if not properly managed and it’s a threat to life. With proper preparation and knowledge, you can increase your chances of staying safe during these perilous events. Here’s are ways to stay safe during flood that you should know.

Before the flood

Create an emergency kit: Assemble a kit containing essential supplies like food, water, first aid supplies, thick clothing, a flashlight, a battery-powered radio, and important documents. Determine escape routes and safe gathering places for your family should the need to evacuate the building arises. Also, stay informed and up to date.

Monitor weather forecasts and heed flood warnings from local authorities.
Additionally, check the entire house or apartment for cracked walls, leakages or damaged roof sheets and fix ahead of time. Don’t oversleep during this time so that in case there is a need to evacuate the premise immediately, so you are not caught off guard.

During the flood

If ordered to evacuate, do so promptly and safely. Follow the designated evacuation routes. If you cannot evacuate, stay indoors on the upper floors, on chairs or on bed. You can double up chairs to be sure you are way above the water. Avoid basement areas and low-lying ground. If necessary, shut off electricity, gas, and water to prevent hazards. Do not use wet hands on electrical appliance whether they are switched off or not.

Also, avoid floodwaters as it can contain contaminants and electrical hazards. Do not attempt to drive or walk through them as you don’t know the depth of the water. instead, find another safer route to ply. Continue to monitor your home and the general surrounding and be at alert for signs like cracks in walls, sagging ceilings, or leaning structures. If you notice any, evacuate immediately.

Moreso, put on warm clothes and socks for yourself and your kids to prevent catching the flu. Air conditioning and fans are not needed now for your health’s sake. Also ensure to put on a footwear on tiles and wet areas to prevent Foot athletes and cold during this time.

Additionally, be a brother’s keeper. If you notice a Neighbour or a fellow citizen needs help to navigate through flood and you are in the capacity to help, please do so. It may not happen to you now, but it can happen to someone you love. Think about it, my friend.

After the flood

The danger is not over yet, so you still need to be cautious and at alert. Continue to avoid floodwaters, as they may contain contaminants and debris. Inspect your home for structural damage and any signs of mold or mildew. Avoid touching electrical outlets or switches if you suspect water damage. Properly dispose of any items that have come into contact with floodwater.

Lastly, adhere to any guidelines or restrictions issued by local authorities on some flood damaged areas or streets. Be sure people are plying the road or street you intend to ply and apply caution as you do.
