If you have read or heard about the book The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives or you have longed to attend the Ake Books and Art Festival, then you are a little bit familiar with a certain wonderful woman named Lola Shoneyin.

She is the type of person to brighten up your day when you feel really down and discouraged — if we are to judge by the day the Guardian Life team met with her to put her on the cover of the magazine.

Shoneyin is both a thinker and a doer. She describes herself as passionate, feisty, expressive, loving and honest. She won the Pen Award in America as well as the Ken Saro-Wiwa Award for prose in Nigeria. She was also on the long list for the Orange Prize in the UK for her debut novel The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives in 2010.

Shoneyin had quite an interesting talk with Guardian Life, discussing the main inspiration behind her critically acclaimed novel and organising a festival for African creatives and book lovers.

Watch the behind-the-scenes video of Lola Shoneyin as she covers Guardian Life magazine tomorrow.
